[Nov 1/8pm] [CLOSED] Kurt, Tavros couragemantra April 6 2011, 21:13:41 UTC
[ Kurt had heard about Tavros being in the clinic, and was struck with both relief that he was at least alive and fear that he was extremely hurt. He got up, ever careful of his injuries, and walked across the clinic and down the hall to the room the nurse had mentioned caring for Tavros in. Yosuke was with Souji, still, and they were both thankfully asleep. They shouldn't miss him.

When he stepped in and saw his friend, he walked over to his bed, took a seat at the foot of it, and gave him a tired smile. ] Hey... we've really got to stop meeting in places like this.

"They were good things. And you're special to me. You're a great person and a good friend and I know you'll find somebody worthy of you, but... no," Kurt's smile was tight and false, mostly because he was trying not to get too emotional on Tavros' behalf. If anyone else were doing this to him, Kurt would probably bitch them out for hurting his friend, but no. Now it was him doing it. While Tavros was in the hospital. What on earth had given him the idea that having the "just friends" talk in the hospital was a good idea? It could've waited, couldn't it? Damn it.

Damn it.

"I do have feelings like that," he explained, chest tight, "but they're not about you."

It was hard to hear what Kurt was saying when his heart was beating so loudly in his ears, but he tried. Slowly. It was a few seconds after Kurt had finished speaking that he understood, and his face fell. He lowered his head quickly at the same moment that he jerked his hand back from Kurt's. He nervously clasped his own hands together instead, trying in vain to stop them from shaking. His head was a mess of confused feelings ( ... )

Kurt was rapidly shaking his head, now - no no no. "No, Tavros. I'm the one who asked. I kind of... got a feeling. And it's better to clear these things up early on. You shouldn't apologize for feeling that way. Feelings aren't anything to be ashamed about. I certainly don't think any less of you - how could I?"

He hoped he was saying all the right things. He hoped he was saying everything he'd want to have said to him in this situation. "You're going to find that happy ending. I promise. And I'll be there to help you find it, if you let me. I just... can't give you everything." He paused, and his voice got quieter as he reached over to grab Tavros's shoulder. "I wish I could."

Beneath his hand, he shut his eyes tightly a moment, taking short, quick breaths. The pain was drifting back in, and he almost wanted to focus on that instead of what Kurt was saying. Instead of the way he was hurting inside right now.

The contact made him tense up, and something gave way, his thoughts and emotions plummeting even further, turning in on himself. A voice inside him- it sounded more like Vriska than Rufio- reminded him of just how useless and worthless he really was. What did you think was going to happen, pupa? Did you really think someone like you could ever get a happy ending? Why had he ever opened himself up like this? If he'd just let it lie like Karkat said, then it wouldn't have to hurt like this. He could pretend it away ( ... )

A hero? What? Did Tavros even realize who he was talking to right now? Kurt was no hero. He was just a guy who cared. The sooner Tavros realized that, the easier it would be for him to let go. Kurt wasn't anything special. He just happened to be one of the first people to be so nice and encouraging to him, and surely Tavros would find someone else who did the same and could actually return those affections.

"It wasn't stupid. There is plenty to like about you. And there are plenty of... real heroes out there. Especially in this world," Kurt said, his voice quiet. And then, even softer, "I'm sorry I brought this up. Maybe I should've waited. Or... brought it up sooner. While we weren't both in the clinic... It just seems like more bad news piled on top of everything else, doesn't it."

Tavros just shook his head and lowered it further, letting his hand drop back to the blankets. He was starting to feel sick, and he could hardly stand himself right now. Suddenly he didn't want Kurt to be there. He wanted to be alone, where no one could see him falling apart like this. But he couldn't just leave. Kurt could, however. He did what he could to try and reign in his rampant emotions, though it was like trying to stuff something into a box that was far too small to hold it. So he tried hard to temporarily pretend it away instead, voice and expression going dull.

"This is, um... do you think you could, maybe, uhh..."

He couldn't say it. Just the thought of telling Kurt to do anything right now felt terrible. He looked up just enough to glance at the doorway of the ward.

"Um..."

"Go?" Kurt's heart sank a little when Tavros eyed the door. Of course he wanted him to go. He was breaking his heart a little more with every word he said. So he decided maybe it was time to stop babbling and just say the important things. His hand slid from Tavros's shoulder and he carefully stood again.

"Okay. Get better," His reply wasn't choked now, but he was sure once he got back to his own ward, he'd probably spare a tear or ten over this. Tavros was a sweet kid, he wished this didn't have to happen. But at the same time, he knew it was a part of growing up. He'd been there, too, and recently to boot. But he also knew that more often than not, it got better. "It'll get better..."

With that whispered reaffirmation, he was on his way out, then gone.

Tavros already missed Kurt's hand on his shoulder the moment it was gone, but he even felt bad for feeling that way. It... wasn't his place, to want Kurt to comfort him. To expect anyone to. But Kurt was still trying, even as he was about to leave.

It'll get better. By the time Tavros willed himself to look up, Kurt was long gone. At the sudden emptiness he felt, it was almost as if he'd never existed at all. He wanted to curl up, draw his knees up to his chest and hide in them, but he couldn't even do that anymore. Instead he leaned his head back on the pillows and draped an arm across his eyes. Would it have been better, if he really had just made Kurt up in his head like one of his daydreams? It would have been fake, but then this never would have happened... why couldn't reality ever be as happy as dreams? How did that make sense ( ... )
