Okita had been in Death City now for more than a month, and despite that, there were days when the place still felt as foreign as it was, times when he marveled at the strangeness of it all and found himself wondering if he'd somehow gotten lost in a particularly fanciful dream.

And then there were nights like this one--when the call went out and danger was imminent, when the air was filled with tension and all of the townspeople took cover. And at those times, it seemed as if nothing had changed at all. The streets were not Kyoto's, and it wasn't Japan he fought to protect, but none of that mattered.

When the alert came, there was no question what he and his partner would do. As rough as things had been the last few days, neither of them could turn away from the fighting, though they might have had their own reasons for answering the call. Their skills were needed. For now, that was all that mattered ( ... )

"I'm sure they'll be fine. They're strong." He was sure his partner's comrades were doing their best to help fight off the invasion.

Ah. The desperation made things almost too simple, though Okita remained wary. His last fight against a truly desperate opponent had not gone particularly well for him. This kishin, however, lacked the tenacity necessary for that sort of last-ditch effort, and it was simple enough for Okita to drop down below the strike and close in, slipping the black blade between the creature's ribs.

Stronger than he was ever going to be, anyway. Perish the thought, though: he couldn't afford any other distractions.

The kishin's body dematerialized soon after it expired, revealing its soul. The area was quiet yet again, for the moment.

The fight and the chase had left Okita somewhat out of breath, so he was grateful for the break in the battle. It would give him a little time to recover before they had to get to work again.

"Well," he commented after a minute, seriousness replaced with smiles again, "should we go look for them?"

There's a smile, brief and a little sad, but there. Good thing he was in his Weapon form. Helped him keep up appearances and all.

He could sense his partner's uneasiness, but he didn't mention it. Some things were private, after all. After taking one last look around to make sure the area was clear, he turned and headed back into the city in hopes of finding the two other samurai.
