Completely oblivious of the note that Tenten had slipped into her abacus bag at the office last night and of the fact that her abacus has been included in a scavenger hunt, Shuurei is out food shopping this morning while the abacus sits on a table in her apartment.

There’s already a whole chicken and a variety of vegetables in her basket and Shuurei is currently examining some discounted oranges.

Shuurei was amazed at how quickly Gai appeared at the checkout and how soon her groceries were bagged. "Thank you for helping." She picked up the bags and started towards the exit. "I live in the Casualty Communal building, on the 11th floor."

"That is a good floor number!" She must be fit, to go up all of those stairs everyday. A moment later it occurred to him that she might actually use the elevator. Oh well. Not everyone could seize the moments for fitness.

He glanced at her. "May I carry the bags? I would be glad to help you out! You are already doing me a favor in letting me borrow the abacus!"

Although the awkward carrying didn't happen in the anime version of the scene...

"A good number? Is it lucky for some reason?" And Gai's reason for declaring it good goes over her head.

“Well, okay.” Normally, she would just manage on her own but after Gai’s earlier suggestions, she was a bit worried he might decide it would be quicker to pick her up and carry her, which could be rather awkward… She offered the bags to Gai and continued towards Casualty Communal.

Gai's carried Kakashi in anime and manga both.

"It means that you can get a good workout daily just by using the stairs! I do not know if anyone finds it lucky. Based on all of the worlds that are represented someone must!"

It was a tempting thought to scoop her up and run with her, but he didn't know her well enough to suggest it. It wasn't right. Gai took the bags and had no problem carrying them, hoping to make haste, but without pushing her. She was still doing him a favor, after all, in letting him borrow her abacus.

“Oh.” Although Shuurei was used to walking a lot and there was a time Ryuuren dragged her and their other friends up a mountain in Sa Province, she hadn’t really been thinking in terms of training. “Do you always use the stairs? We only had stairs back home but some of the buildings here are much taller.”

Due to Gai’s urgency, she tried to hurry but didn’t want to run since the streets were still somewhat slushy. Soon, the apartment building was within sight. As well as a maintenance truck parked outside…

"I do! ...Do you use the elevator?" That could perhaps be faster. And if she wasn't used to the stairs then it would have to be faster. "The buildings are much taller here than in my home as well, but I enjoy working out."

Gai kept to the pace she set, but at the sight of the truck, Gai had a sinking feeling. "...If the elevators are down, how do you feel about piggy-back rides?"

Shuurei nodded. “Yes. I’m not used to that many stairs every day. That invention seems faster and I don’t have to pay to use it.” Because of her thriftiness, she was willing to walk for hours back home rather than spending money on a carriage.

As Gai feared, there were a couple of maintenance workers fiddling with the elevator when they walked into the lobby. “Um, I would prefer to walk.” She could climb all those stairs at a normal pace but not running. “Or maybe, I could lend you my key? The abacus is on the table in the kitchen.” She pulls out a key on a keychain marked 11D.

"Pay... to use it?" That thought hadn't even occured to Gai. He wondered if there were such a thing as paid elevators. Their existence could encourage more working out. Maybe that should be a suggestion, some sort of subscription fee to use the elevators unless someone was injured and couldn't take the stairs

“Yes, I usually walked instead of spending money on carriages back home,” Shuurei explained, oblivious to the idea she had given him.

“No, that’s not necessary.” She blinked at how quickly the ninja disappeared from view and slowly started up the stairs herself with her bags of groceries. She was about half of the way up when she saw Gai running back down.

Accepting the key, she nodded. “Okay. Please bring it to the office this evening.”

"I shall do so!" Thankfully, as she worked for the Watch, he knew where her office was and could make sure to get it there in time. "And thank you again! With this I will prevail against my Eternal Rival! I will win! You have helped me to victory!"

And with that he was running off, dashing as fast as the stairs let him, on to his next task.
