Five times Phoenix missed Maya, and one time he didn't

one. It was strange, how quickly he got used to Maya's presence even though it's been only a while since they first met. Her energy and enthusiasm is infectious when it needs to be, and at other times Phoenix only shakes his head and wonders how he's ever going to deal with her at times. Sometimes, taking care of Maya is like trying to take care of the little sister suddenly thrust upon you.

But still, he can't help but miss her now that she's returned to Kurian, and Phoenix muses at the lack of messes and noise and energy in his office. As much as she brought trouble to him, she had been nothing but appreciated company. Now that she's gone the silence and the strange neatness of his office is a little bit disappointing.

But still she says they'll meet again, and Phoenix holds her to that.

two. These weren't the best circumstances he had wanted to see Maya again, and it worried him that she was in detention once again. Everything about this situation reeked of sabotage, and the man was determined to get to the bottom of this.

Pearl followed him around sometimes as he walked, but the young girl wasn't Maya - she was still shy around him and sometimes left him, so most of the time Phoenix was still on his own as he investigated and tried to find out the truth of this whole situation. As he did his work though the man had to try and ignore how dreadfully quiet and silent it was, and how his investigations lacked Maya's usual commentary. Working with Ema hadn't been the same too, and Phoenix wondered since when had he started expecting Maya around him everywhere.

Thinking about that only made his heart lurch even more at the thought of Maya in detention, and that gave Phoenix even more motivation then ever to find out the truth and get Maya out of there.

three. Maya was kidnapped, she was kidnapped, Maya was kidnapped.

It took all within Phoenix to calm himself down, doing his best not to panic even though all he wanted to do now was panic. Maya was kidnapped, and it was all his fault; he should have known better...

Pearl was beside him, confused and uncertain and asking what was wrong as Phoenix paled and trembled and held the phone in his hands, hearing the words of the kidnapper in his ear instructing him on what to do. Get an acquittal for Matt Engarde, said the kidnapper, and only then would Maya be released.

Phoenix thinks about Maya and Peals and Kurian and hamburgers and the Steel Samurai and everything else for a moment before the kidnapper's voice prompts him again and Phoenix agrees.

He has to save Maya, or he'll never be able to see Mia in the face again.

four. By now Phoenix wondered if he should be worried or distressed at how often Maya seemed to land herself in so many dangerous situations. In all likelihood, he supposed he really should be feeling both at once.

But now wasn't the time to think about that, as he rushed around between the temple and the bridge wondering what could be done. Maya was still trapped there in that isolated temple, and the bridge still wouldn't be fixed for a while yet. All Phoenix could do now was to try and take his mind off things as he glanced around and looked for evidence, thinking of both Iris and Maya and wondering just how things got to this point.

The silence and the howl of the wind was as disturbing as ever, but Phoenix did his best to ignore it.

five. It's been a two weeks ever since the end of State vs Iris, and now that its over Maya decided to return to Kurian with Pearls.

Phoenix drops them off at the train station, giving them both heartfelt hugs and farewells, saying that he'll go to visit them the best he can once he had the time. There's still a backlog of paperwork to be done, so he's going to be busy for a while yet. Maya grins and tells Phoenix to take care of himself and not keel over, and Phoenix says he's not like Edgeworth. Pearls tell Phoenix to take care of himself for Mystic Maya, something which the man laughs awkwardly at but promises to do so anyway.

He stays to wave at them as the train departs, watching at it vanishes into the distance and tries to ignore the quietly sinking feeling in his chest as he lowers his hand and scratches the back of his head. It'll be quiet without Maya again, and he'll miss her - but at least she'll be fine, and that's what important.

plus one. His phone rings over and over again, and Phoenix doesn't even need to look at the ID to know that its Maya. No doubt by now she's heard about what happened and it wanting to ask how he is. Phoenix knows that he should pick up the call and talk to her, quelling her fears and doubts and listening to her voice. He's always appreciated her infectious energy and enthusiasm, liked her eternal optimism and in the days when he was still a lawyer, found her nothing but good company ( ... )
