I guess it all depends on your upbringing. Many Southerners like myself believe in a Higher Being (because there's literally a church on every street corner), Heaven or Hell, and spirits. It's a part of our culture too, being in the Bible Belt. I guess in families where you don't have that influence or a reason to believe in it, then that person wouldn't believe.

I've thought about the afterlife myself. It'd be so scary to die and just cease to exist--no afterlife, just darkness, I guess?

And I know you're not insane...I've never communicated with the dead, but I've always believed people can do that. I watch Sylvia Browne a lot on Montel Williams and I used to watch John Edward. I honestly don't think people make that stuff up. And some of my relatives have seen spirits of some of our dead relatives. It's a really interesting concept.

believing or not believing in "souls" have no bearing on how I treat other people in one way or another. I do not need to fear of karma or after death repercussions to want to treat other humans with respect. I believe you should respect one another out of the general love of human beings not as a way of avoiding some eternal damnation or to be given some reward of everlasting heaven. I simply believe in one thing- do on to others as you wish done on to you. That is it. Respect. You need no other reason or reward. I think it is just that simple... I just do not need to have the fear of god to make me do what I should be already doing on my own.
