What is Shibusen?

Shibusen Technical Institute is a school created by the previous reigning Shinigami-sama for the training of Meisters and Weapons. Its original purpose was to stop the revival of the Kishin, as well as prevent witches from creating a new Demon God. Essentially, it was meant to be a Global peace-keeping operation. Its goal has evolved, particularly over the past six months, and it is now the primary Death City militia and the main force battling the witches.

Recent events in the game have revealed Shibusen to be the one remaining place still capable of fighting the Witches. All other Death Scythes and forces outside Death City have been eliminated by forces unknown.

What is Death City?

Death City is just as it sounds - a city. Located in the state of Nevada, it is the home of the reigning God of Death and Shibusen Technical Institute for Weapons and Meisters. Like most cities, it had various stores, houses, apartments, restaurants. To see the locations available to you, please look at the map that Death Scythe-kun has so kindly provided here.

It was once protected by the soul of Shinigami-sama, however, with his demise, a good deal of that power has vanished along with him. While no one quite knows the circumstances surrounding his death, they do know that his soul was not devoured - and perhaps, some trace of it still lingers, keeping Death City from becoming the number one target for witches and the Kishin alike.

Who is Shinigami-sama?

Shinigami-sama is the reigning God of Death. He is a supervisor of souls and the headmaster of Shibusen School. He is the master of the Death Scythes and capable of wielding any of them, exhibiting ability far greater than any human Meister. The extent of a Shinigami’s power is yet unknown, however, they are not to be trifled with.

The previous Shinigami-sama was killed through an unknown set of circumstances. All that is known is that he was completely obliterated. All that remained was the shattered remnants of his mask, and the mirror he had inhabited up until that point was cracked beyond repair.

With his demise, his only heir and son, Death the Kid has been forced to step up and take his place. As he is still a child and not yet comfortable with his position, he keeps his identity hidden to all but a few, donning his Honourable Father’s cloak and mask, and still attending classes whenever possible. When he is on duty, introduces himself as Shinigami-sama and is rarely seen beyond the walls of the Death Room.

Who are the witches?

The Witches are a group of magic-users who live outside of the borders of Death City.

They refuse to abide by the laws of Shinigami-sama, electing instead to cause chaos and discord with their magic. There are some who wish to live harmlessly, avoiding the punishment of the Death God and his Meisters, while others are malicious in their intent and hope to wreak havoc on the world.

Witches are powerful beings and considered to be highly dangerous - however, their souls are easily detected by those with Soul Perception skills. Some witches, such as Eruka and Medusa, are able to hide their souls using the spell called ‘Soul Protect,’ making their presence seem like that of a normal human. Destroying a witch and harvesting her soul is considered the final step towards forging a Death Scythe.

With the death of Shinigami-sama, they have become far more open in their assaults on humans, no longer afraid of his punishment. They know that Shibusen is weakened thanks to the chaos brought by his murder, and don’t intend to let their opportunity pass.

NOTE: However while the Witches are powerful magic-users, not all magic-users are Witches.

What is the Kishin?

The Kishin is the Demon God. There are many incarnations of the Demon God - in fact, it is possible for more than one to be created.

The Kishin is the product of a corrupted soul, having gorged on the souls of the innocent to become something inhuman. Its soul produces what is known as the ‘madness wavelength,’ which nurtures the madness that lives within all humans, eventually driving them to insanity. If left unchecked, it would eventually force the entire world into madness, ultimately resulting in its destruction. Anyone who strays from the path and takes the life of an innocent is capable of becoming a Kishin.

The last known Kishin was the Kishin Asura, a former warrior of the late Shinigami-sama. He was sealed beneath Shibusen in a prison made of his own flesh until the witch Medusa revived him. It is thought that Maka Albarn, Black Star, and Death the Kid vanquished him six months ago - however, it is not known for certain what occurred.

What is BREW?

An excellent question - Even Shibusen isn’t sure what exactly BREW is.

BREW is a demon tool created by Eibon and the former Shinigami-sama, both of whom are now deceased.

From what is understood of the mysterious object, it seems to have the ability to grant the heart’s most desperate desire of its user. Unfortunately, due to the level of magical power stored within BREW, it would appear that the user doesn’t have to intend to use the tool for it to activate, and it is only capable of granting one wish at a time.

The true purpose and origins of this device (Aside from who created) are a large mystery as well. Excalibur is said to know the tale, but good luck getting anything useful out of him.

Who is Mifune?

Mifune is a normal human warrior, with an extremely powerful soul. He is the bodyguard of a young witch named Angela, and has been taken under the wing of Shibusen school. Angela is now safe from harm to learn her magic and the ways of peace, while Mifune offers his services as both a warrior and a teacher. There’s a rumour that he will accept challengers...

Who is Sid?

Sid is your resident homeroom teacher for all new recruits! Like the man he once was, he vows to teach you everything he can about this would, Shibusen, and anything you will need to know to fight in this war. He's very approachable and even a bit excitable.

Just don't mind the fact that he's a walking blue zombie. He doesn't bite, we promise. He will however, kick your ass into next Sunday should you mess with his students. He's not a three-star Meister for nothing, after all.

What is Excalibur?

There are rumours of a Holy Sword with the power to make bring its wielder fame and glory. For some reason, no one seems to be able to tell you much about it - even Professor Stein was unable to wield it. However, it seems there is a book about it in the library...

...do the sun and moon REALLY have faces on them?

Yes! They have bright smiling faces that will greet you every morning and night! :D You should try to greet them back! See what happens!

Could a character speak in another language that they knew (or even use their own ESL skills instead of BREW's auto-translating) if they tried? Would they have accents?

BREW allows characters to understand each other, however characters can still speak in their own language to not be understood by other people in Death City if they choose. Think of it as something of a translator by choice, with a person's 'default' being that they will speak in a way that others can understand via BREW's power.

As for accents, that's completely up to a player's discretion for their character. So things like honorifics and such are fine!

What is the Shibusen Records Office?

You must have noticed that our navigation page has a variety of lists pertaining to what the characters get and do upon arriving in Death City. These include the mission board, soul tally, meister and weapon directories, partner directories, and residences. These lists are ICly maintained by the Shibusen Records Office. All relevant special conditions are indicated in the lists themselves (for example: residence lists are available in the lobby). If you want your characters to see these lists, they will need to ask an NPC ICly.

Unless stated otherwise, these lists are not available for all to see unless stated otherwise.
