Refuse to feed him until the dishes are done? I don't know. I think he responds when he is told in the right tone that shows "no" is not an acceptable answer, but I don't know. So is he doing the dishes yet?
Actually, it comes to me that the only thing that RELIABLY works with him, is to tell him exactly what you see his behavior as, and what is causing it (in "big-picture" terms). I know that's something you're not good at, but it is something that works the more it's used. It forces him to look at his slothfulness, and even his convoluted excuses can't get him to ignore it.
