Christmas

As I was taking a shower this morning I started thinking about my beliefs and the beliefs which center around Christmas. It goes without saying that Christmas IS a Christian produced tradition based on Jesus Christ. There is no need to feel guilty or hypocritical about celebrating "Christian" holidays. Just remember that the Christian holidays predate Christianity and were simply adopted by the Church, which came up with Christian rationales to continue celebrating pre-Christian holidays.

Jesus was not born on December 25th, he was born sometime in the spring. The celebration of his birthday was set for December 25th because that day was a popular holiday and the high holy day of the Cult of Mithras, which was early Christianity's greatest rival in the Roman world.

X-Mas exists in my home and it is a celebration of giving to those you love and those less fortunate. Including some charity donations. The reason for celebrating is not for Jesus but for Santa. He believes in Santa and that is what and who we celebrate. Santa, snowmen and other various nicknacks of X-Mas are around. Brandon asked me why some kids in his school say Santa doesn't exist and I told him because they don't believe and their parents don't believe therefore they don't get presents from Santa. Instead they celebrate Hannuka and get one gift for eight nights. He nodded and said, "Well I am going to believe in Santa forever, I know the truth." So then came up the discussion of what the date symbolizes for the birth of Jesus but I was sure to tell him that Jesus was actually born in the spring and that the stories about him come out a little more fairy tale then reality based. I told him when he gets older he can go to church with Grampa to learn more if he wants ( ... )
