Tonight I had a woman tell me she hates feminists. I really don't know what to do with myself when confronted with a statement like that....

people who hate feminists really just hate angry women. they don't know what a feminist is exactly, they probably just got told off, or their boyfriend got told off, or they saw a made-up movie situation where someone was getting told off, by some "angry feminist" and it made them uncomfortable. People see one vocal feminist group in a rage and they're like "that is feminism". When people think about feminists they don't exactly think about sexual health clinics, or women being doctors and lawyers and CEOs and judges and politicians, or volunteers for youth or poverty groups, or women's shelters, or what happens in the legal system when their 13 year old daughter gets raped and whatever. they just think about some boxy self-righteous out of control bitch going around making men squeamish for no reason, as if it's removed from, I dunno, the right to vote or something.

I know, and those are the sorts of ideas and questions I put forth. Turns out, from what I can gather, a women's studies course was the root of the problem for that particular person (my own deduction which she agreed with).

I also think this woman was suffering from that sort of "I am going to argue for the right of everything" a la Anne Colbourne, which REALLY annoys the shit out of me. It's like women feel that it's progressive now to hate feminism or speak out as such.
