victoria calls him after their first comeback performance
--
she calls hims after their first comeback performance.
"hi, ge. how have you been?" victoria softly mumbles into her phone, the static and thousands of miles between them ringing in her ears.
hangeng chuckles, a sound she hasn't heard from him in a long time.
"i've been good, ah qian. really good"
he sounds happy, healthy, as if leaving korea was the best thing that ever happened to him. a little part inside of her resents him for giving up.
(a little part inside of her wishes she could do it, too)
there's an awkward silence, as if they hadn't been friends (lovers) for years (months), before hangeng clears his throat.
"i saw your performance online. you guys really improved. i'm proud of you, ah qian"
victoria hears the sincerity in his voice, and laughs, because this is the hangeng she remembers, the kind, sweet boy who spoke to her in mandarin and made fun of her broken korean.
"i finally got more lines!" she says brightly, and her happiness seeps through the static. "though, i'm not too happy about what they did to my hair"
hangeng can hear her pout and he chuckles, because it reminds him of days of grueling practices (where she would whine until he agreed to piggyback her back to her dorm) and kisses in a dark recording studio, lingering hands and stolen touches.
(it's times like these his heart aches just that little bit more, maybe even regrets leaving, because it meant leaving ah qia-victoria behind)
"i think you look beautiful anyway, dodgy dye-job or not" he says matter-of-factly, and victoria laughs because it's so straightforward and hangeng.
"thank you, ge" she whispers softly into the phone, and the static crackles the silence between them.
"i miss you" she says in a small voice, almost wanting to cry, and hangeng hates the fact that they're thousands of miles apart, because all he want to do is hold her.
"i know" his voice trembles. "i miss you too. i'll come back soon, i promise. just - after everything is solved"
victoria takes a deep, shuddering breath, and it says everything she doesn't (when? how? do you expect me to wait for you? do you want me to wait for you?) before hangeng can hear the shuffle of footsteps, her manager reprimanding and victoria says,
"i have to go now, geng. um - say hi to your mum for me. i lo-take care of yourself, ge!"
the line goes dead before he can say what he didn't (couldn't) say before he left, before it was too late and now they're stuck in this constant state of heart-breaking limbo, of steelbound contracts and an ocean between them.
i love you.
