Saw both The Hunger Games and Act of Valor today!
Wow. Totally did not go the way of Inception! I loved it! I was actually okay with how they changed the Mockingjay pin's introduction. I haven't read the subsequent books, so I don't know whether that will impact on future events. Josh and Jennifer acted the fuck out of their roles. The Reaping was done so, so well; the emotions, not just of Prim, Katniss and Peeta, but of all the other children was so clear.
The one thing I didn't like was how quickly it ended after they won the games, though I think I also felt that way about the book. It did skip over Katniss' revelation to Peeta that she was playing to the crowd, which I would have liked to see. I did like the way it cut to Gale when Katniss was doing anything remotely romantic towards Peeta.
I'm not sure I liked the change with regards to District 11. Maybe I'm misremembering, but instead of a riot, didn't they send Katniss a loaf of bread as she was starving? Though perhaps they did also riot, and it was just that it doesn't get revealed until a later book? I was sad they didn't get to send her bread; it was such a moving moment in the book - the District didn't have much money, and to sponsor items is so expensive, and yet they loved the kindness that Katniss showed Rue so much that they gifted the bread to her.
Act of Valor is quite a good movie, but you have to really like action. It's pretty much a string of action scenes held together with a teeny-tiny thread of plot; fortunately for me, I do like that kind of movie. It's also the only movie I've ever seen that has an introduction from the guys who made the movie ahead of the film board's classification screen. That was different and nice.
I spent time chatting to a guy who was sat across the aisle from me before The Hunger Games; it was nice to see that my social skills are not completely rusty. It was so wonderful to go to the cinema and see lots of Avengers Assemble posters and see the trailer twice!
