881. Yo ah yo.
Many have given the movie 881 rave reviews. Some found certain parts of the movie wacky. Then, there’re some who didn’t think very much of it.
While the movie didn’t lack comedy moments, there were a number of scenes that tugged at my heartstrings and triggered my tears to flow unrestrained. I can't remember the last time a movie made me cry this much and so readily.
· When 大木瓜’s mother found out she was performing at 七月歌台, 大木瓜 got chased out of the house, all of a sudden becoming homeless and abandoned for pursuing her dream.
· After shooting to fame as one-half of the 木瓜姐妹, 大木瓜 took some hard-earned money to her parents. In an act of disapproval, 大木瓜’s mother took the notes and threw it back in her face.
· Aware that the family has hit a rough patch due to stiff competition, 关音 made the difficult decision of selling off his beloved pet rooster. Moments after leaving it with the bird store owner, 关音 turned back. Looking forlornly at his pet rooster and holding it one last time, 关音 shed tears as he plucked a feather off it for keepsake.
· As the 木瓜姐妹 lay on the ground, injured and spent after a showdown with the 榴梿姐妹, their arch rivals, their hands stretched out towards each other and their sisterhood shone through.
· In the days leading up to 小木瓜’s death, 大木瓜 was always by 小木瓜‘s side in the hospital. Even as 小木瓜 withered away from a losing battle with cancer, they still sang together in the hospital, never letting go. When 小木瓜 breathed her last, only 大木瓜’s singing filled the ward.
· 大木瓜 took to the stage on her own following 小木瓜’s death. The song evokes painful memories of 小木瓜, causing her face to contort as her tears fall uncontrollably. Among the audience, 小木瓜 looks on at her sister and joins her on stage in spirit. 关音, who appeared to be able to see the 木瓜姐妹 reunite on stage, sheds tears of his own.
· As the film’s credits rolled, 关音 looks through the pictures he previously took of 小木瓜. Unknown to 关音, he had followed in his father’s footsteps. Though 小木瓜 is the one he truly loves, 关音 ended up getting involved with 大木瓜. Looking pensive and wistful, he reminisces about 小木瓜, the one he truly loved and who was now gone forever. With the song in the YouTube video below playing in the background, my tears fell once more.
