Character name: Yakushi Kabuto
Fandom: Naruto
Timeline: Post chapter 356 but before chapter 514; He has absorbed Orochimaru's power but not gained control of it.
Age: 21
~*Magical*~ abilities and strengths:
Kabuto is not much of a fighter, but he is a ninja, and just like the rest of the ninja from his homeworld he has many ‘magical’ abilities. The most basic of these is a “body flicker” where the user moves so fast as to be invisible and appears to almost teleport to another location. Ninjas generally use a puff of smoke to conceal their movements while using the flicker and Kabuto rarely uses it as a combat technique. Similar basic skills are the ability to create illusion and clone copies of oneself (though generally these disappear after a single blow). This is often used in collusion with the “body flicker” to replace a person with a clone centered on a cut log. A similar technique surrounds the user in an illusion that can make them look like another person. Being able to sense and control ones own chakra is also an essential skill, and can be used to do things like walk on water or up walls as well as move extremely fast.

Beyond these general abilities, Kabuto has healer-specific traits. By focusing his chakra in his hands he is able to heal a wide range of wounds, both internal and external, merely by touching the afflicted area. (This works by the chakra simulating the patient’s own healing abilities. Kabuto uses this to not only heal himself and his patients, but also to strengthen areas of his body about to be attacked. ) Using more power, he is able use the technique to induce a coma in his target, making it easier to manipulate them. He is a trained doctor and uses his knowledge of anatomy with deadly precision in battle. Unlike many of the other healers in the series, he possesses the ability to puppet corpses by re-awakening the body and using his own chakra to manipulate it. Uniquely, Kabuto is also able to cause dead cells to reawaken and heal themselves. Under Orochimaru, Kabuto’s medical expertise allowed the older man to vastly increase the efficiency of his experiments; Kabuto was able to keep test subjects alive much longer, and then reuse the bodies once they perished. Given the nature of Orochimaru’s experiments, Kabuto likely has much more experience with severe injuries and strange illnesses than even the normal ninja-healer.

Despite his skills not lying in combat, Kabuto has some techniques that have utility both in medicine and battle. “Chakra Scalpel” is his baseline attack; by focusing his chakra into his hands he is able to create highly precise incisions both inside and out of the body. It’s also mentioned that he has some skill at producing poisons, medicines and “soldier-pills”, the latter being a medicine that acts as a stimulant to heighten the users chakra production, strength and agility.

How would they use their abilities?:

Kabuto is a healer, through and through. Learning about the human body, its powers and limits, is what fascinates and drives his interest in science. Given the opportunity, he would happily work as a doctor or nurse, or even as a biologist or a researcher. He would take any job where he could expand his knowledge and heal others. Removed from the politics and plot of his homeworld, Kabuto might give up some of his sadistic tendencies, though it is more likely that he will simply not show them around the ‘normal’ people, reserving his sadism for the other people of his world whom expect such things from him.

Unmentioned in the earlier section, Kabuto is also a very capable administrator, which may lead him into the more boring jobs on the ship (though perhaps he will be better able to deal with the Vogons that way) given his penchant for paperwork and order.

Unless called upon to defend himself, he will not use his abilities to harm people unrelated to his job or his world. Kabuto is not a fighter; he may be cocky to people he considers a threat but he goes out of his way to avoid fights and diffuse any dangerous situations through non-violent means.

Appearance: Kabuto is tall with broad shoulders and long grey-white hair which he keeps tied back in a pony tail. He wears round, thick-rimmed glasses which have a tendency to shatter whenever he is hit (which is often. It’s rare for him to escape a fight with his glasses intact). His ‘uniform’ is a pair of dark purple pants that come to his calves and a matching sleeveless over shirt with a large collar. He wears a white t-shirt beneath this and a white belt over the ensemble. He keeps his equipment either in a pack secured around his right thigh or on his left hip. On occasion he wears the more traditional black-with-green-vest uniform of the older ninja’s of his world. He prefers long, tan cloaks with hoods that shade his face when he needs to hide his identity rather than a jutsu that changes his appearance.

Background/Personality:
Background
Kabuto has been a spy since a very young age. When he began working for Akatsuki is unknown, but he was adopted into Konoha at the approximate age of eleven, having been found on a battle field. His adoptive father was the leader of the undertaker squad and one of the best medical ninjas Konoha could offer. Kabuto apparently learned much from this man. However, he kept his talents hidden, preferring to remain a completely average student so as to learn more about his classmates abilities and powers. When his cover was finally blown after his attempted assassination of Sasuke (though how much of that attack was truly an assassination attempt and how much of it was maneuvering to learn more of the Leaf Village’s loyalties is uncertain) he withdrew to become Orochimaru’s personal physician and main bodyguard.

Of course, his loyalty to Orochimaru has often been brought into question. He began serving the man under false pretenses - he was once another one of Sasori's brainwashed spies. But Orochimaru was able to break that enchantment, giving Kabuto at least one reason to remain loyal to the Snake Sannin. In his own worlds Orochimaru “won him over to his way of thinking”, though Kabuto has never seemed to be the most loyal of servants. Or rather, his loyalty is such that he feels confident in critiquing his master’s flaws and testing his restrictions. Perhaps it is this independent streak - coupled with the appearance of honest loyalty - that propelled Kabuto through the ranks of the Sound Village. Despite Kabuto’s contrary attitudes, Orochimaru honestly trusted Kabuto. That trust seemed to have been warranted - Kabuto offered his body as Orochimaru’s next vessel once and risked his life for the other man on several occasions. Yet Kabuto failed in his duty to protect Orochimaru. The Snake Sannin was defeated and absorbed by Sasuke, leaving Kabuto without a leader and stealing from him the man that gave him the only true home he’d ever had.

The result was an emotionally unstable healer seeking to fulfill his duty and revive his master in any way he could. That twisted, lonely logic resulted in the young man choosing to combine Orochimaru’s DNA with his own, a process by which the Snake Sannin’s powers were conferred upon Kabuto and the ninja began the process of becoming Orochimarus next ‘host’. However, Kabuto has no intention of loosing himself completely to the other man, and has resisted the loss of self ever since his ‘mistake’ in taking up his masters calling. The scars and scales that cover Kabuto’s left arm and face are markers of the struggle between the two ninjas while at the same time hinting at the joint power that Kabuto now wields. Yet, with the destruction of his world and his appearance on the Mostly Harmless, many of his reasons for fighting would be gone, and he may be able to put aside his need for revenge and focus upon making a future for himself.

personality
Ninjas are by nature secretive people. Kabuto, for various reasons, is more secretive than most. He holds what he cares about deep inside of him and almost nothing can bring his true personality to light. Perhaps it is because that personality is dangerous, or perhaps because it is anything but. Instead, the face he presents to the world changes based upon those around him - and he is quite apt at convincing himself that he truly believes what he is convincing others of. He has lived lies for so long that he has forgotten who - or what - is the real ‘him’. Instead he prefers the masks that others make for him.

Of all masters he has served under, Orochimaru was perhaps the kindest to him. While the older man was an undoubted monster, he was the first person who ever noticed Kabuto, despite all Kabuto did to hide himself. In the end, Kabuto came to view Orochimaru as something of a surrogate father figure; while they did not always agree on everything, Orochimaru would listen to Kabuto and encourage him, pushing him to the extent of his powers and praising him for his actions. That was the reason for Kabuto's loyalty, not just the fact that Orochimaru saved him from Sasori. And, understandably, Orochimaru's death shook him to the core. He had never let himself care for anyone else, and now the person who he depended upon had abandoned him. When he merged with Orochimaru's DNA it was for reasons beyond loyalty; he was truly grieving and lost. But at the same time, he could not give up himself to his masters powers, and still struggles to control them. While he cared deeply for his master, he realized he cannot give up everything he is simply for the sake of another. In a sense, by intending to sacrifice his free will, he gained it for the first time. So he struggles with his masters powers and DNA, desperately trying to find meaning in his life and looking for his purpose.

What he does know is that he actually enjoys healing the sick. It is the one skill that is uniquely his and given the opportunity - say, freedom from the need to revenge himself upon an entire world - he would devote himself to learning more about the human body and medicine. Loosing himself in research is something he genuinely enjoys; it offers a challenge and is the one place where his sadistic side is balanced almost evenly by he desire to do good.

To the ninjas who may recognize him from the Naruto world, it will almost appear as if he has combined two of his personalities. It is clear that he is no longer the incompetent weakling of his Konoha years, but neither is he pretending to be Orochimaru’s sadistic right hand man. He finds it easier to be polite to most people, and enjoys the positive response it brings. At the same time, he is not incompetent, and he lies only when its to his immediate advantage, rather than habitually. To be honest, he has little desire to return to his own world; he had few good experiences with the power system and would much rather stay in a place where his skills are useful rather than 'weak'. Be considers coming to the Mostly Harmless to be a fresh start, one that he was never offered within his own world, and he would be a fool to destroy that by starting a war or successfully recreating their planet.

If one were to describe his personality quickly, it would be to say that he is 'nice' to most everyone, 'cautious' around people he views as a threat, and openly hostile only to people who provoke him.

1st person sample:
I must admit, this is…unexpected. Two weeks ago I had not known there even were other worlds, and now it seems that mine has been destroyed as a result of some clerical error and I have been saved from annihilation randomly, while the more worthy people were left behind.

To be honest, I don’t mind as much as I should. Given what I’ve learned about other worlds since coming here, there are places where children aren’t used as warriors, places where being tortured isn’t a reason to be executed, places where…well. Places where people like me don’t exist. Somehow, it isn’t as comforting as I would have thought. Those worlds were destroyed as well, after all. It seems no one is safe from galactic paper work.

But who am I fooling? It is much more likely that I have either gone insane or am trapped in a madman’s illusion. Of course, if the later is the case, it is a phenomenal illusion, and its creator should be commended for his creativity. If it is the former…well, it was always a danger. This madness is certainly more comforting than the reality I left behind. Still, there should be some way of proving it either way, some test to prove my sanity or lack thereof. In the mean time, I shall enjoy my freedom while it lasts.

3rd person sample:

Its midnight on a Wednesday. His clinic is closed for the evening, and the ninja has been home for a little over an hour, checking his personal experiments and getting ready for bed.

There is really only one kind of visitor that comes to him this late at night, and the doctor already has his medical bag in hand when he opens the door. He catches the woman as she collapses on him, his eyes already taking in the damages that need to be repaired - a badly broken arm, a few broken fingers, perhaps some missing teeth, and a black eye that will have to be covered up before she goes back to work. A name flickers to mind as he pulls the woman into his apartment at locks the door.

"...Angie?" He brightens the lights with one hand, replacing the soft yellow light of with piercing halogen white.

The woman winces under the onslaught. "Mm 'not Angie now. ‘m street name’s Sugardrop." She's half delirious from pain. Kabuto is surprised she made it up the stairs. "The other girls said you could ‘elp."

"Are they covering for you?" Never mind that she probably shouldn't be able to think now. He needed to know.

"Naw. ‘es drunk an' the rest are stick'n to the streets. 'e probably thinks 'e killed me when 'e threw me down the stairs."

So the doctor needn't worry about an angry pimp knocking on his door anytime soon. That made things simpler. Still, he dead-bolted the door then and half-carried the hooker to his work room. The injuries were easy enough to heal, all that was required was to set the bones and apply the right amount of chakra. The technique was different for non-ninjas and aliens, but Kabuto had already gotten quite a bit of practice. A doctor who was willing to work on anyone, even criminals? His practice - both the daylight one and the one that operated after the doors had closed - had grown quickly. Never mind that he had no diploma, his customers knew they had nowhere else to go.

"'ow much do I 'ow ya?" The prostitute whispers, before he knocks her out with a quick tap of a pressure point. The girl was barely seventeen, and still scared - though whether it was of the strange ‘magic’ or the man who had done this to her was impossible to tell.

"Same price as always." He replies as her eyes close, giving her respite from the dull pain of healing. "Only as much as you can pay." What they could pay was often nothing monetary, but they would volunteer the blood and bile he needed for his experiments. Most didn't seem to mind the strange requests. Kabuto was fair, and the best they could hope for.

By now he knew most every prostitute and criminal in the surrounding area. The government tolerated Kabuto's side business because it reduced the unexplained bodies and stopped them from having to pay for ‘degenerates’ clogging up the hospitals. Sure, it was illegal, but then again, just about everything was, and if it meant less paper work for them, who cared? Plus, the doctor seemed to enjoy his work.

So he cleans his hands off and carries the girl to a cot he keeps around the place for just that purpose. There may be more knocks on his door later in the night, given what the girl told him before she passed out. The best solution was to brew a pot of tea and wait up a bit longer. No reason to turn away a desperate knock, right?

Questions?: Could the people who brought him in have placed a lock on his powers so he doesn’t turn into a crazed zombie-making snake lord?
