I'm taking a massive risk with this song. But here goes.
I hate reggaeton. Fucking hate it. I've waited for so long for a good movement of hip-hop to come out of Latin America, and all I get is this formulaic, completely unoriginal bullshit.
But, there's hope. Residente Calle 13 does reggaeton, but he does it well. The production on this song is incredible. He actually shows some creativity in his sampling--the horn parts are ace, from the more prominent horn melodies to the subtle flourishes of clarinet (starting at about 3:00). It doesn't compromise the heavy reggeaton beat with lame-ass keyboard sampling (I'm looking at you, Daddy Yankee). And it's upbeat, makes you wanna move, as most Latin songs should. Even if you don't dig the song overall, if you aren't at least nodding your head to this song, then you're not getting the soul of it. I don't think I've ever heard a reggaeton song that struck such a perfect balance between real, authentic Latin rhythm and hip-hop influence. The percussion is done beautifully, plain and simple.
More reasons to yes this song:
--There's a reference to a previous song that was accepted on the mix, Conjunto Canayon's "Chaflan", which provides for some coherence on the mix
--He makes fun of Green Day and Coldplay
--He says all Puerto Ricans know karate. Seriously, I wish you could all understand the lyrics, because it's very very laid back, with a pretty nuanced sarcasm.
--I'm risking a fuck of a lot by actually liking a reggaeton song. Pity points!
Anyway, enough of the essay. Point is, reggaeton sucks, but Residente Calle 13 doesn't. Download. Enjoy. Yes.
