a/n - regarding the
gang structure, nick is a fringe gang member. he functions well outside of the gang, particularly as a socialite, and has not made an entire commitment to a life in the criminal gang culture. really, it was all just a bit of laugh at the time when he was younger, being a part of a gang had been seen as something exciting and how he's kind of got one foot in the door loyality wise
within the gang itself, he's a part of a clique that gravitated towards each other because they're kind of a bit mess and not really that great at being gang members - they'd all been obligated or cohersed into being a part of the gang, or in wanting to be a part of the gang
louis, in the gang structure, is not actually a part of it. he's still a wanna-be, the lure of the gang is really strong and it's all rather exciting. there's reasons in his past as to why this particular lifestyle appeals to him, and he does certainly not want to talk about it
he and his wanna-be friends - harry, niall, zayn and liam - who are all a part of the clique that nick is a part of (this worked out through harry because of hipster ties. who'd thought being hipster could get you into a gang??) copy some of the dress of the gang and always have a pile of spray paint cans in their back packs.
additionally in this clique, greg james and matt fincham are hard core members of the gang . they're not as hard core as they really could be and lmc is almost recognised as a hard core member. ian chaloner and fiona hanlon are associates who are lazily making their way up to hard core members. many of nick's socialite and apparent celebrity friends are also fringe members, including but not exclusive to pixie geldof, miquita oliver, olly murs, example and friction.
(okay i had a major mental blank then, trying to think of all the people that nick is friends with, which is totally stupid because he's like friends with everyone but like all i could think was louis, loUIS DOUBLE FINGERS IN THE EYE LOUIS LOUis let's talk about louis for no reason at all, we need excuses to talk about louis i'm sorry.)
there's something about the wanna be louis that reminds nick of himself, and it feels a bit like he's watching a much more compact and tanned version of himself making all these bad decisions just like he did. it's like watching himself fall into the gang, trying to get caught up in all this illegal shit and really, if nick could go back in time and tell himself not to be a part of the gang, he would. he really would. so, he can't not say something to louis, can't try and stop louis from fucking up his own life. and, well if he's not good at tact and louis kind of hates it him for interfering, nick's trying okay.
they are also the most ridiculous gangsters ever.
gang au where nick is a fringe member and one direction are wanna be's in the main clique he's a part of. louis reminds nick a lot of him when he was younger, and nick and harry concoct plans to try and ensure that louis doesn't really become a part of the gang.

"why don't i just talk to him?" nick whines, because really harry actually has the worst ideas and everything they do seems to make louis want to be a part of the gang even more, "it can't fuck things up more than it already has."
"i would find it a lot more insulting that you don't mind me becoming a part of the gang if you crush on louis was kind of endearing." harry answers because he doesn't actually know how to answer a question and nick rolls his eyes, "really un-gang like though, you're not very tough."
"you're impossible." nick sighs, "and i hope you end up going to jail and get married to some guy called en blue and wake up one day with his name tattooed to your arse okay."
"don't quote baseball movies at me," harry huffs, "i hate baseball. also you can't talk to louis, that won't work at all."
