I asked my boyfriend if he knew what to do...he's majoring in Computer Science. but he didn't have a clue. :(

that sounds pretty annoying...

make sure you have all applications closed when you try to run a defrag. press ctrl-alt-delete once and depending on your version of windows, you'll either get a list of everything running on your machine, or a menu giving you the option to open the task manager which will display said list. close everything you can except task manager and explorer. if a defrag will still not run with everything closed, then you will need to reload your machine. its a pretty deffinent sign of fair to extreme software corruption, and fixing that without reloading is a very tedious and time-consuming task for someone who knows machines well, and pretty much impossible for the average user.

windows not filling your screen when you maximize them is also a symptom of the above-mentioned software corruption.

turning cookies on is in the security options of your web browser.

your best bet then is going to be to reload the machine. get any data you need onto disc or cd or somethin, as this process will start the machine from scratch basically. assuming you have a store-bought machine, there should be either some restore CDs that came with it, or a windows cd. the restore cds will set the machine back to factory defaults, and running it is usually just a matter of starting the machine up with the restore disc in the drive, then following the on-screen instructions. If you just have a windows cd, then its going to be a bit trickier since you'll need to reconfigure the hardware in the machine after reloading windows. if the latter is the case, then Id suggest having someone you know IRL whos computer-savy handle it since the actual steps of redoing drivers will vary depending on what exactly is in your machine, and its not something I can really give a step-by-step for without actually being in front of the machine.

the funny thing is is that i bought the comp second hand and i'm not sure where the cds are. i don't remember if i have them or not...or where they would be if i DID have them.
and i DO know someone computer savvy. you. lol. not that i expect you to work on my comp. i just thought it was funny the way that you said it.
thanks for trying to help me though. i appriciate it.
