You don't have to be sore from working out for it to be helpful. Also, even if you aren't building up any muscle, your cardiovascular system is getting a workout from having to pump harder for an extended period of time....so you are at least strengthening your heart.
King Science is right! I've been regularly working out since I quit smoking. I've gained not a lot of weight or tissue, but the last time I had my blood pressure checked, the nurse literally went "wow -- that's really good blood pressure." yay!
