S ... lots of things begin with S. How about ... sunset, scarecrows, swamp, snow, and shopping?
We had an absolutely gorgeous sunset that day in Blackpool. 18 Aug 2011. I think we've got about a hundred photos of it.
We went to see the submissions for Broadbottom's Scarecrow Competition in 2011 (26 June). It was a gorgeous day, and far too hot to stay inside (our place gets unbearably hot during our ten hot days a year - heat rises and all). We had a great time, once we figured out we were simply meant to wander around the village to find the scarecrows ourselves. These are a few of my favorites. The theme that year was Royalty - so we have here the emperor's new clothes, Elvis and Freddie Mercury (King and Queen), and the King Edward potato. :-) They were all really creative, and quite amusing. We really should go along next year.
Can't miss out the swamp! This is from Jean Lafitte National Park, Louisiana, 16 Mar 2008; this is during Chris's first visit to me. We like this picture so much we had it printed onto canvas, and it's hung in our living room. :-)
Snow - and slush. This was Buxton, 4 Feb 2010. They don't hardly shovel / clear snow here, so it turns to slush like that in high traffic areas - and then freezes overnight into ice. This is why I hate it when it snows here - it becomes so treacherous just because they don't manage the snow properly. I hate it, and find it incredibly unfair. They used to get snow here really deep every single winter, only thirty years ago. There's no reason in the world why whatever management of it they did then can't still be done - snow-clearing technology hasn't changed that much! Instead they rely on spreading salt and sand on some of the roads, and leaving pedestrians to fend for themselves completely.
On a more cheerful note, we have shopping. Here's just a few of my regular haunts, from a shoot I did on 6 Feb 2010. We have the indoor market for the first two (first one side, then the other), including the cheese stall - look at that array of cheese! No piddly little four choices here! Then (bottom left) we have the greengrocer we use,
Sowerbutts (which also starts with S!). Yes, that's really his last name. Poor sod. Last (bottom right) is
Praze, our local fine foods shop. May they stick around a long time! :-D
