If you are able to build yourself from nothing to making more than 200K a year, I don't think it's punishment to pay higher taxes to the country that enabled you to get there

Good points on all counts, Earl. But I'm not really thinking "fairness" is the responsibility of government. Perhaps we'll disagree on that. I don't think either scenario is ideal.
However, what was proven by Ronald Reagan is that lowering taxes, freeing up business and the American people from confiscatory tax rates, INCREASES revenue to the treasury, because more taxpayers are created. Therefore freeing up money for government to spend wisely.
If people can't pay their medical bills, perhaps this is a noble venture of government to assist them. This calls into question the spending habits of government, not it's legalized theft of honestly-earned money.
If Bill Gates wants to buy another boat (or an entire island) it is his business, and government ought not interfere. After all, government has engaged in its own ridiculously indiscriminate spending.

There are no more excuses. If we cannot now all believe that we can rise above our past and achieve our dreams, then nothing will make that happen.
However, if you dare to dream of wealth in this America, you will be punished. Have fun with that.
