Another Post about Bigby

I warned you I'd be one of those dog owners.

So we went for a walk this morning. Bigby is kinda odd. If a person walks by us, Bigby will completely ignore them as long as they just walk by. If they stop and say something, he'll take a polite interest. Other dogs, he just has to run over and get to know them. Obviously, I don't let him do that when out for a walk. At the dog park sure, but not just out in the neighborhood.

Speaking of the dog park, my rescue dog must think he rescued me or something. Normally, Bigby is incredibly well-behaved, friendly, doesn't get agitated when people come over to visit, he's just a really god dog. When we're at the park, he usually just goes from dog to dog, smelling, and then moving on. Occasionally, he'll join in a game of chase. But heaven forbid someone's dog comes up to me, then he'll snap at them. Nothing dangerous if you know dogs, just a "Don't even think about it!" type of reaction.

He is beautiful, but not always the smartest dog. I've heard people remark how gorgeous he looks and so on, so I don't think it's just the owner's ego (ahem). But my goodness. Play fetch with this guy and he'll be in full charge running mode after the ball, then something, somewhere will catch his eye, and he just completely forgets about the ball. Another example: He can see the toys in the tupperware type box; the lid is on but not attached. I'll even move the lid a little bit. But he just doesn't seem to get the concept that he can move the lid himself.

We saw a cat today, sitting under a car. Bigby just couldn't be bothered. Didn't care a bit. Later, there was another cat walking toward us on the sidewalk and meowing quite a bit. This cat was either terribly overfed, or was really pregnant. Again, Bigby couldn't care less; he wanted to keep walking. I stopped and waited for the cat to come to me and rub against my hand. At that point, the dog slunk down real low, and snuck up behind me to try and sniff at the cat from as far away as he could. Just an interesting exchange.

He's got some weird phobia about the kitchen. The apartment is carpeted, but the kitchen isn't. I can throw his toys anywhere else in the apartment, and he'll run around, grab it, shake it side to side (just to make sure the rubber toy's neck is broken), and bring it back. But if I throw one of his toys into the kitchen, he'll go right up to the line, stare at the toy, look at me, stare at the toy, etc. Weird. I had to put his food/water bowls right on the very edge of the kitchen so he'll eat.
