So, Bigby is an adopted dog. He was released by his previous owner and while in the shelter, his old name was posted above his kennel - "Lassie" Whatever the reason, that used to be his name

Rattigan has the same issue. He was an extremely popular dog with the Humane Society staff and, unfortunately, he had been returned twice so he has spent a little more than a year in jail. They, and all the volunteers, know him as Devon. His previous 2 owners also called him Devon. One of K's workmates knew him as she is a volunteer. According to her dogs like Ratty, once their permanent owners change their name, associate the former name with being at the Humane Society or being returned to the Humane Society. Those families who gave him up ... abandoned him ... called him that. He associates Rattigan (and all the subsequent nicknames) with love and home. It's a little frightening when his home calls him the name that means kennel.
That is some very deep thinking. I wonder how Bigby's case would differ from that. As far as we can tell, he was a pet shop puppy. His microchip was from a pet store but was never activated. He was just shy of 2 years old when he was released, so we're guessing he had a family at one time. He'll follow me around the house wherever I go, but he'll only play with Steve. Yeah, he'll chase a ball with me or play tug-of-war, but "play play" where he bounces around and bows is only with Steve.
He doesn't kiss people at all (except by accident). There's just a lot we don't know about the little guy.
