Notes: UM, MAYBE this is kind of self-indulgent. I do love Sam-gets-Dean-back-from-hell fics, yanno? It's not terribly depressing but it's not too happy either.

Summary: Hell had changed his brother, and Sam has to help him relearn what was forgotten.

Nicely done. I like how you depicted Dean post-hell, how he’s broken but not beyond saving, and also how you portrayed Sam, so very worried about Dean but not about to give up on him.

Favorite lines:

The screaming is nothing like Sam has heard before, not from Dean, not from anyone. Fear and anguish and despair bubble up in his own chest, but he puts his hand over Dean’s mouth - hates himself for doing so - covering the inhuman noises passing over his brother’s lips, not just because it scares him.

This makes me ache so much. Poor Dean, in such agony, and poor Sam, hurting so much for him.

He tries not to sob when Dean flinches away from the warmth of Sam’s own fingers.

Oh, Sam.

Dean throws the match into the earth and it all ignites, the wailing on the wind slowly fading out to the hiss and crackle of the purification below.

Great ending image. Good details, and I like the sense of peace here.

Oh, this is a lovely, painful yet heartwarming piece. I love that you've taken time with Dean's recovery, something that, alas, I don't expect we'll see from Kripke et al with as much care and diligence as you've taken here. This was gorgeous and hopeful. Thank-you!

I think you're right. They handled the grieving process after John died with some care and there certainly was some pay-off for us angst fans so I *do* think we'll get something. Just perhaps not as much as we'd love to see Jared and Jensen get to sink their teeth into.

We'll soon know for sure ;)
