i can't. it would ruin a lot. we have so many friends in common and if something ever happened it would be so awkward. plus i don't want to lose him as a friend

Forget those feelings. Let them go. I've done that too many times to allow anyone to do it with out a warning. Trust me, that's a path you don't want to tread down.
