Do you think it's possible to live in NYC and have a relaxed, comfortable existence without breaking the bank?

As long as you're realistic about where you want to live you can afford it. My rent's only 500 a month with utilities.

$500! Crazy, that's less than I'm paying here. Where are you now anyway? In a perfect world, I'd work in Manhattan and live in B'lyn in a $600/month + utilities apartment without a totally bitch-ass commute. Like I said though, perfect world.

crown heights. I'm just on the other side of the park from where I used to live in park slope. Just don't live in bed-stuy or anywhre where you're only option is the g train and you'll be fine. If you wanna come down and look at places this summer I'll help you out.

I think it's possible, I have it figured that with 35k(not a ridiculous goal one year post grad) with benefits I could live pretty comfortably as long as I stick to the burroughs for my living space. But then again, getting a real job that will give you even that is a bitch, I just quit my own and am stuck temping. But I think the job market sucks a lot in every city for post grads these days, I always thought my expensive degree would amount to something.

Although, according to Business Week (not like I normally read this, but I needed something to kill the time), there's a lot of job turnover happening in NYC right now, like "everyone is hiring and everyone's looking" to quote the article. I don't know how true that actually is.

Yeah like I REALLY don't want to move without having a job there first, but that's not gonna happen. 35K a year would be fantastic, to me that is the stuff dreams are made of (remember that I have a BFA in WRITING for god's sake). It's not like I'd want to live somewhere AWESOME or anything, I'd just like to feel relatively safe and pay like $600/month. Who knows.

I pay seven and live in a pretty big place(like, I actually have a full bed) and it's convenient. Just stick to brooklyn or astoria and 600 is totally in reach. Just be comfortable with commuting to work an between one and two hours every day.

I agree. My best friend lives in Astoria and I am on my way there by September. It's a neat place to live. Cheap(ish), safe, easily accessible. But as for living in the city, you'd be incredibly lucky to find anything realistic.

haha dude I'd totally rock the NP. I kind of don't want to get a car though. Not too sure if the publishing industry's exactly booming there either. What are you doing this summer?
