CHARACTER NAME: Kasumi Goto
FANDOM: Mass Effect
CHRONOLOGY: Just after her recruitment and loyalty mission (going on the assumption she is the first recruit Shepard picks up so she can canon-bounce through the story.)
CLASS: Hero…who steals things.
SUPERHERO NAME: n/a
ALTER EGO: Kasumi Goto, art dealer.
BACKGROUND:
Kasumi comes from the universe of the 22nd Century, where mankind has gone to the stars through the use of massive ‘Mass Effect’ gates that hurl ships hundreds and thousands of light years in the blink of an eye. Humanity has forced its place in the galaxy, expanding rapidly and unapologetically, and made their share of friends and enemies along the way. Currently though, the galactic community is recovering from the attack of the Geth and Sovereign on the Citadel, the capital of galactic politics.
Kasumi herself was earth-born, Japanese, but she doesn’t talk to anyone about her childhood. It wasn’t unpleasant, but it’s never been something she likes dwelling on.
She went off-world as early as she could and took to thievery…and discovered she was very, very good at it. She had a knack, you might say. It helped that she was basically a klepto, and a tiny Asian girl who could disappear into a crowd. As she got better she made a small name for herself amongst the people who would hire an art thief, and began having herself augmented through gene-modifications and cybernetic enhancements.
She based most of her work off the citadel, working for any of the races that ran their traffic through there, and then later on spread out to cover the lawless Terminus systems as well. Her life was quite nice, full of excitement and daring escapes and peaceful shopping trips, stealing from private collections and such.
Then she met Keiji. He was another thief (she actually ran into him on a job where they were both stealing the same thing, and tackled him to keep him from getting away with it) and they were a perfect match for each other. Wild, fun jobs, dares into swiping things that were supposed to be impossible to get at, constantly pushing each other to get better.
She loved him immediately and immensely.
So of course, after a few years, something had to go wrong. Keiji found something…information that would make the human government look completely terrible in the eyes of the alien governments, even with the fact that the Alliance had just saved everyone’s collective ass from their Reaper enemies. When an arms dealer found out about this information, he tracked Keiji down and killed him for it.
Kasumi was trying to think of a way to get revenge…and to get what she could of Keiji back, when the organization Cerberus contacted her to help save the universe (for a lot of money, of course). She agreed…provided they help her with her job as well. And that’s how she met Commander Sheperd…
PERSONALITY:
Kasumi is something of a lesson in not letting your work bring you down. On the one hand she is an amazing thief, and brags (not without earning it) that she’s the greatest thief in the galaxy. (Not the most famous. It takes a lot of work to be the best and not to be famous.) She steals for a living, and she is exceptionally good at it.
But she doesn’t do it for money. She steals for the challenge, not the reward. Finding out if she can get past the next obstacle, overcome the next electronic lock, take out the next ten guards (without killing anyone) always keeps her going.
On the other hand, she’s a rather happy-go-lucky sort of woman with a decently sarcastic attitude and a pretty big gossip streak. She loves pointing out the obvious terribleness of a situation in a cheery way. In one circumstance, they meet an Asari scientist who is helping a crazy general bio-engineer a perfect killing machine, which Kasumi relates as ‘She seems nice, in a ‘mad-scientist, ethics for sale’ sort of way. She has a rather timely sense of humor, and isn’t afraid to use it.
She is extremely dedicated to the things she believes in and the people she cares about, and though being a thief has made her exceedingly wealthy, she never does any of it for the money. She’ll spend months organizing and arranging an undercover identity to sneak into a slave ship and rescue a child prodigy rather than spend that time doing something that would make her money.
Despite her profession, she is also very obviously not a ‘bad’ person. When confronted with the horror of a Cerberus biotic-engineering facility, she is genuinely horrified, and comments several times about how terrible it is.
POWER:
Cybernetic Enhancements: (canon)
Cloak: Kasumi can disappear and become almost completely untraceable to all visual and technological tracking methods. Extremely observant people can probably hear her, though. The suit also allows her to breath in low-oxygen environments and doubles as fairly decent body armor.
Cybernetic Eyes: These allow her to see in the dark and see electronic fields. She can’t also trace energy patterns and detect weapons concealed underneath clothing. They are brown in natural light but glow blue in shadows and darkness
Omni-tool: A basic, all-purpose hacking and system-manipulation device that she wears on her wrist and appears with a holographic interface when she needs it.
Reinforced muscle and bone structure: Kasumi’s body has been enhanced to allow her additional agility and strength.
Rumormill: (non-canon)
Kasumi knows absolutely useless information about people she meets. How did she learn it? Did she overhear? Everyone is so sure she wasn’t around, but she always seems to know! IE: Who is dating who, who pissed off who, who knows how to cook what, who has a crush on who…rumor stuff.

COMMUNITY POST (FIRST PERSON) SAMPLE:
[Kasumi is seated on a park bench outside of a museum, flipping through the little information packets they hand out at the front door as you arrive. She smiles at the screen, her eyes mostly hidden by her hood, only the shimmering glow of her false blue irises is visible.]
I wasn’t really expecting much when I came to the museum here, honestly, but I’m impressed. Most of this stuff was long since sent out into the galaxy by the time I came along, and we’d started collecting Turian statues and Quarian epics and stuff like that to replace it. Valuable stuff, and honestly…I always figured it was a lot more interesting than whatever we lost.
But some of the art in there…you know, I’d never seen a Picasso before. Not in person, I mean, just in the vids and holos…it was…
[She just shook her head and smiled.]
It was something else. I almost couldn’t resist trying to take it home with me. I suppose they would have objected.
Oh well.
LOGS POST (THIRD PERSON) SAMPLE:
Kasumi stood silently on the edge of the display, watching as the last of the museum patrons were ushered from the building by the guards. She was leaning against a bare spot of wall, out of the line of any patrons or guard patrols. It was the part of the job she hated and loved, the quiet, motionless waiting. After all, the hardest part of most museum jobs was breaking in after everything was locked up.
And she didn’t have to do that.
Once the last of the footsteps faded away she made her way silently through the room and into the next exhibit, pausing by the door to scan the corners. There were three cameras, but she checked to make sure before she let her cloak fall and activated her Omni-tool. A few quick taps of the keys and a gesture in the air, and all three cameras began sending the last five minutes of emptiness over and over.
She made her way to her target, a moderately sized painting pressed in against one wall…she’d been fascinated with it during her earlier visit weeks before, something had just…captivated her. So she’d been quite careful to talk about something else when she’d talked on the network. That would’ve just been amateurish.
A quick check revealed no pressure sensors on the painting, so she drew a thin blade from her pocket and began carefully cutting through the glass in front of the painting. After a moment the pane was set aside and she slid the paper from its frame, holding her breath as she waited…this was the tense part. There was always the chance of some other alarm, some thing she had missed. That was half the excitement, really…
But no, there was nothing. She let out the breath and smiled to herself as she delicately rolled the painting up, and then turned away and disappeared in a crackle as her cloak reactivated, concealing herself and her prize.
Twenty minutes later when the police were called and came storming into the building, she quietly slipped out, and headed home.
