If space has to be involved does that mean the character's have to go into space at some point? Or is that just a general sci-fi-ness must be included and it can't just be about the character's within the space 'verse without the ships/aliens/gadgetry?

No, they don't have to go in to space, but space/sci-fi just has to be the/one of the main subject(s).
