The tech/software world is more hostile toward women and certain ethnic backgrounds, I think. When I was a "computer programmer" back in the 80s and 90s it was about 50/50 men and women, with representation from the general population in the area race-wise. I believe the Silicon Valley startup mentality changed all that and made it a bro culture. The "disrupt" idea - we don't follow no stinkin rules, you can't tell us how to populate our company, we work 20 hours per day, and don't want any sensitive types around that make us have to watch our language. Or even take a shower every so often ( ... )
