five seconds

I went to the WMU basketball game yesterday and I saw something that made me think. Western was winning by one point with literally five seconds left and the other team was about to pass the ball in bounds for one final attempt at the win. to be fair, there were 5.5 seconds left. clearly, that changes everything. "fans" would actually be getting an additional .5 seconds on traffic. in fact, the number of things that it is possible to accomplish in 5.5 seconds is drastically greater than the list of things that could feasibly be done in a mere five seconds flat. perhaps most noteably, the five second rule would have expired. don't ask how exactly that's relevant. further, there is obviously a point at which leaving early isn't completely moronic. if someone had left, say when wmu was up by 15, then no one would have thought much of it. with 3 mins to go? no big deal. i'd even given them six seconds without much thought. undubitably, the line between moronic and average fan is somewhere between 5 and 5.5 seconds.
