Yeah, that's why it's so dumb for our culture to talk about "fear of commitment" like some kind of dysfunctional, immature thing. Commitment is a huge thing. It's not something anyone should even contemplate without a lot of careful examination. It's something of which any rational person should have a healthy fear.

It's wonderful that you've recognized this about yourself, and wonderful that you're in a situation where you feel ready to move forward regardless. But I'd advise you not to think about it as a negative thing about yourself that you've taken too long to overcome. It's a good thing, one that kept you from doing anything harmful to yourself before you were ready.

I'm glad you have had your epiphany & hope things go well for you & Will.

As far as commitment goes, I think a lot of it comes down to relationships with parents & the examples they have set. I know multiple people who have had problems with the opposite sex because of problematic childhoods, including myself. Opening up yourself to change and the possibility of failure is hard but can also be very rewarding.

I am so happy for you. I think what you have discovered about yourself will make you a much happier and healthier person. There will always be rocky times ahead but if you can keep in mind your epiphany I think you will be just fine!
