I think it's 'back-berth' instead of 'back-birth'.

When Dobson says it, he obviously means something like "What do you think I am, a moron?" and a "berth" is either where you sleep or where you store things--a "back berth" wouldn't be as insulting as implying some combination of "your emerging backwards resulted in brain damage" and "they kept the placenta and threw away the baby."

I couldn't read it until today because of various reasons but this is amazing. Zoe's relationship with Wash is hard to write but you've got it down.
