the Rassilon we should have had

May 16, 2006 21:45

Since the throwaway mention of Rassilon in "The Deadly Assassin", many Doctor Who writers have attempted to flesh out the picture of this quasi-mythical figure from Gallifrey's history, culminating (at least for me) in an extended appearance by Rassilon himself in the Big Finish audio "Neverland". (The less said about his brief cameo in "The Five ( Read more... )

Heh, not that I'm aware of - it took me ages just to write *this*. I'll come up with fanfic ideas from time to time, but they never get past the idea stage. And besides, in this particular case, it's more of a post-mortem thing, looking back and seeing what should have been. Which probably means that it was rather pointless to write this in the first place, but at least I got some mental exercise out of it, even if nobody else reads it or gives it much thought.

Yeah, you'll hate Zagreus, particularly for what they do to Rassilon's character and raison d'etre. I won't say more as it would obviously spoil your "enjoyment" of the story. (I say enjoyment in quotes because I don't think you will enjoy it much.)

I do agree with you though, a Doctorish Rassilon would be much more interesting, but given that he would be Doctorish, would his personality have sat still long enough to let such pomp and circumstance as what we see in Time Lord society to evolve? Heck, maybe in the end, Rassilon faked his death so his compatriots would leave him alone, and he's still out there having adventures of his own! ;)

Hello,
I just stumbled across your journal. I am a fan of the classic "televised" series. I'd love to chat or have friendly debate with you. The Deadly Assasin is always a good reference. The Doctor didn't seem to know of his existence prior-which is mentioned in that story. It seemed that later writers liked to throw his name about a lot without researching past stories. Doctor Who continuity has always been a bit shakey, but from the 90's and onwards it seemed to become a tangles mess. I would be interested in reading your views on the matter.
