Yay, I love it! Especially Laurie's ongoing "training". (I can almost see her jumping around on a forest of poles, like in stereotypical martial arts movies, although who needs that when there's a real forest around?)

It's even worse than he thought, because usually at these thrice-damned banquets he has Hollis to his left and can pass a few words with him over whatever horrifying marital prospect has been seated beside him, (he's starting to think his father is trying to punish him for being such a rotten prince, because this girl has so far proved horrible in every arena save etiquette) but tonight Hollis is covered in a thin, silver-grey miasma, and Daniel is almost too worried about him to hear his companion speak.

What feels like years later, it's finally over, but of course he has to escort a girl who makes him think of soured milk, and to lead her bony, brittle body through the dance that follows. Asmoleda is a thousand times better at it than he is. His dancing master had always despaired of him. He moves too fast and too freely, no matter what he does, in addition to sometimes losing his place in the more complicated figures. He actually manages to muster up a grain of fond feeling for Asmoleda, because she does seem to at least instinctively realize that he is both untalented in this area and actually willing to take direction from a woman. She steers him around and actually manages to make it look like he's leading and that he knows what he's doing ( ... )

Ghost Rat stalks in one step behind her, inscrutable behind his mask and wearing his usual vest, loincloth and chaps combination, only intricately beaded in black and white and with fringes and clean white bones and crow feathers added.

Can we get a drawfag on this, like, yesterday? It sounds like some gorgeous costumery, and I'd love to see it rendered.

That said, POOR DAN, getting stuck with an airheaded inbred retriever of a noblewoman. I'm sure that things will pick up a bit now!

Not a drawfag when it comes to people, but I was juuuust thinking that I need to get off my ass and describe the costuming as I see it, with anon's approval, of course (since we were talking about costume design already). More fodder for artists of all stripes!

(And yeah, Ghost Rat's "black/white tie" is awesome. <3)

Oh god, this is seriously one of my greatest kinks: family-of-choice rescuing someone from family-of-origin, stalking in and being all "We're with him. And he's way more awesome than you ever gave him credit for. And we are amazingly hot, and he totally scored us, so SUCK IT."

That said, I'm kind of fascinated by the OT3 dynamic in this story, how there's this epic bloodbrother friendship between them but without any overt sexuality thus far (but maybe in the future?? QUIRT.) At any rate, this is one of my favorite chapters to date.

They're headed that way, but for once I'm taking my time. Dan has always wanted to fuck Laurie, he's just being courteous about it. Ghost Rat wants to fuck her, but he's ignoring it because he's her sponsor on the whole Way of the Warrior thing and it's A: Simply not done, (to a point, but you know Rory) B: He's a ghost, so he has nothing to offer her, and you can't start out that way, C: he's a virgin whose mother hated him, so he has to lose it in some kind of ceremony that will undo some of the damage and he's much too shy to ask, and D: Because of all of the above, he's repressing it.

Laurie wants to do them both, but hasn't quite realized that Jon meant it when he said, "go ahead and fuck around, I'll be gone a lot and humans need human company", and she thinks Ghost Rat would be mortally offended if she hit on him.

oh I'm not hurrying you -- by all means take your time. I kind of love the sheer intimacy and loyalty developing between them. And you're keeping us adequately supplied with smut elsewhere : )

1) I dearly hope we get to see that ceremony someday; I have a weird feeling it's going to involve at least two other participants, one to take the sacrament and one to offer it. Dunno why I have that idea.

2) Are you saying Daniel and Ghost Rat don't want to fuck each other here? I think it's probably even further down in their conciousnesses, but that it's there.

3) I keep thinking of Jon's little smile at the end of the GN over sleeping Dan & Laurie.

Seriously, that smile makes me love him so much even if he is a big blue retard for listening to Nixon when he's essentially god. It's all "aw, this kinda hurts because I love her, but it's SO MUCH HEALTHIER."

As to the Ghost Rat/Daniel dynamic, I'm not sure if they know. Ghost Rat probably wants him but is repressing it partially because he doesn't really have a paradigm for man-on-man action. It's that actual Plains Indian thing where you can be as homosexual as you like, as long as your relationship is heterogender. And Ghost Rat doesn't want to put on a dress, and he doesn't want Daniel to, either.

Daniel must know that he's bisexual, because in Aigyptos it's all "boy, girl, or both? I have several of each kind. =D" I think he noticed how nice Ghost Rat's body was and then resolutely stopped thinking about it, not wanting to put on a dress, get stabbed in the face, or god forbid, both. It's essentially the same reason he's not hitting on Laurie. He's trying to be polite and assumes neither of them want him.

Finally, court etiquette is working in Daniel's favor. Since Laurel outranks Asmoleda, he's supposed to cordially bow, kiss Asmoleda's hand, and hand her over to Ghost Rat while he escorts Laurel. He feels like he's throwing his friend into the path of a fireball spell, but his father will kill him if he does anything other than what's correct. Ghost Rat seems profoundly confused, but to Asmoleda's credit, she takes his arm and leads him to a seat, even though Daniel can tell that she's more than a little afraid of him ( ... )
