The thing historians and naturalists have always said about the north country is that there is too damned much of it, with too little in it. It seems to be nothing but a vast expanse of snow for most of the year, springy tundra for its brief summer. The large, labyrinthine cities are few, and even with most of the agriculture that sustains them taking place in gardens within the walls, they can't take up even a tenth of the massive space. The next two weeks are spent riding through this endless white. It seems to calm William and Byron, even as they watch for more interference.

Asmoleda would get nervous and vague with so little sense of distance or direction, only Ghost Rat seems utterly incapable of refraining from teasing her, in his quiet and vexing way. It's a little like dealing with the younger brother of a friend, only Ghost Rat is slyer and a thousand times more effective. He musses her hair, wraps his arms around her when he doesn't absolutely have to to correct her swordsmanship (Daniel and Laurel both insisted, ( ... )

Dangerous as the city is for Byron, they have business at Southford. Asmoleda does her best to contain her delight. Byron has become a dear a friend and a comfort to her, and she would be wretched if anything happened to him, but she has dearly missed the place. And hot water, and not riding all day every day. Daniel is of course cursing the delay in language that still shocks her, even if she has been irrevocably coarsened by her journey. The bonefields are sacred ground, and a foreign prince is no match for the Teachers. They must give their permission for any incursion there, the land itself screams underfoot if anyone tries to proceed without it, and all requests must be made in person, for religious reasons. Daniel is desperate, but better mages by far have tried to pass undetected and paid the price. He's no good to anyone with golden, sickle-shaped daggers all through him ( ... )

The South Gate opens into the largest market on the continent. If you can't get it here it's time to charter a ship to the Eastern Isles, although it would be worth looking again, since the few small wonders that do cross the sea wind up here, with perhaps a few missing relatives in Delirium. Ghost Rat, his nose as sensitive as a wild animal's, is sneezing like a cat in the miasmic barrage of competing scents. Spices, perfumes, resins, food from every corner of the globe, and the effluvia of a manic, shifting menagerie that includes Slowwings, a relative of the Venomwing that sells for five hundred gold an ounce. Laurel laughs at Ghost Rat, Asmoleda takes in the scene with avid eyes, and Byron holds William's hand, a bittersweet smile on his face ( ... )

Utterly, utterly in love with this fic. Utterly. The anthropology, the culture, the prettyyyyyyyy-- I think I could only accurately portray my adoration with a heaping pile of ALDJSFLGJDODFGIHFBD and more squees and flails than are healthy... and my limited skills as a drawfag. Really, I hope you know you've sparked something fannish and dangerous in some friends and myself that will doubtless yeild over nine thousand drawings of questionable quality and at very least heaps and heaps of praise for the beloved anon responsible.

<33333333333333 have some adoration.

My favorite part is all the little comments because MY BRAIN DOES THE SAME THING. FUCK YOU [BODY PART THAT ISN'T WORKING OUT AT ALL]. I guess I'm just paranoid that people will see and think it's terrible/stupid XD;

Anywho, I like them! I get what you're going for between the notes and my own costume knowledge. Hehehe Dan looks so bitty and adorable there.

The women's quarters are extensive and incredibly beautiful, in the opulent, northern style. It's like the inside of a jewel box, everything done in rich red brocade, flame dragon designs picked out in gold. There are rich, plush furs in abundance, giving Laurel and impression of barbaric splendor and Asmoleda a rush of fond memories. All the women in the household live here: Four wives, sixteen concubines, all their maids, all the girls who fetch and carry for the maids, small girls in training to be servants (some sold to the Longfires by desperate parents) and the three old women in charge of the delicate, costly cosmetic magic available to the women of the clan even in their reduced circumstances. Besides the women, there are eunuchs, and the households children, who have an adjoining complex of their own. Laurel is delighted that they'll have solid, sensible William to talk to, since he'll be bunking with them. She and Asmoleda are staying in the apartments of Madame Longfire as if they are her own sisters visiting, nad ( ... )

but what if she did have a daughter, and she fought against her daughter having her feet bound, if she fought at all?

I love how you don't shy away from the nasty stuff, but oh, I will have to read some HS AU fluff every time after I read about the willow feet, it's a personal nightmare of mine since I read about it as a little girl. The farming families don't do it, but middle class and above do, aspiring classes too, as men would demand even the poor girls they have brought as concubines to be virgins with small feet. What long and national horror, that would break in infanthood the bond between mother and daughter by compelling the woman to obey her husband and secure future marriage by mangling her daughter!

I sympathized with the character of Walter because my mother doesn't love me either, or she's not protective of me as much as Face...she had my ears pierced when I was eight, because she heard that it'll make girls settle down (I was very boyish)...I know, I just know, if it was a hundred years ago, she would have broken ( ... )

Yeah. :( I have to admit, it makes me look a little bit askance at China, because that's some fucked up shit, and unlike the fucked up shit of clit-whacking, it's so localized. Like, *nobody else* was quite crazy enough to come up with it.

I went with willow in this fic because of the latitude I've put the north country at. I live in Alaska, and their biome is a bit based on mine, and lotuses don't grow here, so they couldn't be lotus feet. But willow leaves, at the least the scrub willows that grow around here, are long and pointy, with a rounded base, just like the ideal broken foot. Ugh.

I did a drawing, once. 'The Most Beautiful Woman In The World'. She had bound feet, was circumcised, had a corseted wasp waist, had those Bangladesh rings on her neck, her skull made all pointy like the Incas did, and she had pierced ears stretched out to a huge hipster gauge. She was sitting on a pedestal.

Daniel looks tired when he comes in, and Ghost Rat takes his mending off the lounge so his friend can stretch out, rubbing at the markings his goggles have left on the bridge of his nose. "Three days." He sighs and looks up at Ghost Rat, dark eyes full of sorrow and that slightly vague expression that comes with being two steps better than blind. "Do you have any idea how fast that is for what I'm trying to do?"

"No." His other pair of chaps is piled into his lap, a bone needle flickering in and out of the soft leather. One of Laurel's shirts is draped over the arm of his chair.

"It's fucking phenomenal. The bribe I laid down could buy the third Longfire daughter." He pauses. "Well, with a few personal favors and a lot of a gifts thrown in, and only because of my own political important. But still." He groans. "It's not enough, Ghost Rat. I want to break into their temple right now and make them give us our commission ( ... )

The beds are covered by rich, brocade canopies. They could have each had a room of their own, but Daniel had known without being asked that Ghost Rat feels safer if they share. Now he's glad of it, listening to the rustling and cooing from across the room. It does his heart (and other parts of him) good to hear how Ghost Rat is getting on. A moment of awed silence makes him sure that Peach Blossom has let down her hair and that Ghost Rat is drowning himself in its inky fall. Cora's hair is light for a northerner, the rich, clear brown of certain honeys, and Daniel indulges in his own moment of adoration, wondering all over again just what they use to keep it so soft. He forgets to ask Cora as she pulls him down, and as they move together he listens for Ghost Rat, hearing raspy little sobs and low, rusty purring over Peach Blossom's soft cries. She sounds... Daniel isn't even sure, but he definitely wants to find out firsthand what Ghost Rat is doing ( ... )
