Kovacs has yet to meet the other troupe. He ranges alone in the forests near the center of the island (after basic classes from Laurel in what is and isn't poisonous) and ponders the turns his life has taken as he crouches on a branch, gnawing a mango. It's one of the first ones to ripen, juicy and sweet and perfect. He supposes he shouldn't be surprised when someone shows up to take it from him
