Chapter One
Spike stood by the window, gazing out into the darkness.Dark to think he used to love the dark. The hunt, the smell of fear, and the taste of warm blood flowing into his mouth.Wincing he cursed the soul and the guilt and agony it gave him.His hunting days had been over for a while now. Now he dreaded the darkness. The opening of the Hellmouth had cast the town in constant darkness, he'd lost track of how long it had been since the sun had rose last. Willow had estimated a little over a month. It seemed far longer.
There was only the five of them now. Willow,Giles,Xander, the Bit and himself. They had all grown to rely on one another.Funny what a appocolypse will accomplish.Too bad the others couldn't have accepted him before all this.Things would have turned out so differantly.
"Standing there looking out the window isn;t going to change anything." The softly spoken words broke through the silence. Spike turned to find that Willow had entered the room without his noticing. Something that had been happennig more and more often these days.
"I know." Spike said running a frustrated hand through his hair. "She's out there.I can feel her. Taunting me,letting me know we are only safe as long as she wants us to be."
Willow flinched at the rawness of Spike's voice. Buffy's torture session with the blonde vanpire had left some serious damage to his larynex. The scars were still fresh and they weren't healing as quickly as they should. He hardly eats and he sleeps even less. Fearing as they all did that to do so would leave them open for attack. So as a result he wasn't healing at a normal rate,if he were his injuries would have been healed by now.
When they had built the new High School over the Hellmouth they all had feared this would happen, so it came as no surprise when it had. But they all had thought the same thing. They would handle it just as they had everything else living over a Hellmouth had thrown at them. How wrong thay all had been. After the first week of the increase of demon activity, the town's people had started to leave, the one's whjo hadn't had parrished quickly. But them they had stayed behind.Hoping to save their little town and the rest of the world by figuring out how to close the Hellmouth once more.
But it proved to be much harder than they thought it would be. Darkness had fallen over the city, causing them to remain constantly on guarde. With no way of knowing how far the damage had traveled, and no means of communication to find out. No one knew whether or not there was a safe place to run to. So they were stuck here, hoping each day they would some hoe manage to make it till the next.
The demons walked the streets with no fear now, they had no reason to be afraid. The Slayer had become one of them.
"She can't get in,Spike. Not without an invitation." Willow told him not knowing who she was trying to convince more. Spike or herself.
"Bollocks. You know as well as I do, they owen this town now. No invite needed. No ones safe anywhere. Least of all us. She's waiting for us to let our guarde down long enough for her to make her move."
Spike lit his last cigarette, then started pacing. He had to think, but he did his best planning while being drunk. And he had just drank the last of the whiskey, and he couldn't risk going out to nick some. He couldn't leave them alone, he wouldn't be the reaon for their deaths also. He swore angrily. He hurt in places he forgot exsisted, and would give anything to be able to lie down and sleep for a couple of days. But knew he didn't dare. Five people against a town full of demons, not very good odds. Add to it one Slayer turned vampre, and screwed didn't even begin to cover it.He was so preoccupied with his thoughts he didn't hear Giles walking into the room.
"We need to leave here.See how far this has spread."
Spike looked at him like he had lost his mind. "And just how to you propose we do that, hmm? In case you haven't noticed,Watcher. There's a town full of beasties out there, not to mention Buffy just waiting for us to make a move."
Giles took off his glasses, rubbing at the tension between his eyes.He knew this would be the reaction he would get.And he also knew Spike was right. But there was no choice really,if they stayed here it meant certain death for them all anyways.
"I realize this,Spike. But we have no choice.Staying here or not.If they really wanted us they could get us here as well as out there." Walking further into the room,Giles waited,he knew at one time the blonde wouldn't have listened to anything he had to say,nor would he have talked anything over with him.But since the soul Spike had changed,if he was honest with himself. It was long before that though.
Spike had always been one to be ruled by his emotions, whatever they may be. Whether it was love hate or anger. And he knew the blonde blamed himself for Buffy's turning. He had witnessed the brutal turning of his Slayer, though he never talked about it. Giles knew he relived it every night in his dreams. Which was probably one of the reasons Spike hardly ever slept.
"He's right,Spike. We really don't have any other choice. We ate the last of the food this morning." Willow added softly.Giles knew how hard she had taken Buffy's turning. She had tried so hard to restore Buffy's soul, and failed.
Spike wanted to scream and rant. Wanting nothing more than to wake up and find the last few months to be nothiung but a terrible nigthmare.
"And besides he's right,Spike. How long will it be before they come looking for us,anyways? They know where we are. There wasn't a demon in Sunnydale that didn't know where Buffy's house is.Buffy knows where we are. We have to take a chance."
Spike knew Willow was right, but it didn't make him feel any better.Leaving the relative safety of this house, walking nito God only knows what out there. With no guarentees it would be any better anywhere else. If they made it.
"Have you thought on where to go? We can't just leave here with no destination in mind. Learnt that lesson the hard way with the Hell bitch." Spike said, defeat coloring his voice. Giles walked acrossed the room, causing Spike's eyes to narrow. He was acting awfully unsure for someone who was positive leaving was the best option. Then when he answered him he knew why.
"Angel's."
Spike could only hope he hadn't heard him right. There was no way he had just suggested going to Angel's.He had to know how bad of an idea that was. With the Hellmouth's opening and not knowing how far the damage had spread. They could be jumping from the frying pan right nito the fire.
"You can't be serious." Seeing the look on the former watcher's face he knew he was.
Giles nodded, then explained. "I thought on this long and hard, and believe me you're not the only one with doubts about going to him.We don't even know if this has spread as far as L.A yet,Spike."
"And if it has?Are you willing to risk not only your life, but everyone elses as well?" Spike broke in."If Angelus is loose, then we're as good as dead anyways.Personally I rather take my chances here."
"We're all going to die anyways,Spike." Giles saida angrily."There's no where else to go." He turned to a very quiet Willow and said. "Get some rest. We'll be leaving in a few hours.Tell the other's also.Get some things together, but take only what you need. We need to move fast ."Willow nodded before leaving to do as he suggested.
"You do know that you may have very well just signed everyones death warrants." Spike sadi softly. Giles said nothing he just turned and walked away.Leaving behind a very pissed off Spike.

Chapter Two

Giles looked at his sleeping passengers, and sighed. The plan to leave Sunnydale had went surpriseingly well. They had all loaded into Joyce's old jeep and then started driving keeping their eyes peeled for any demons that may pop out unexpectantly.None had and now they were on their way to L.A and Angel. Hopefully he wasn't driving them to certain death.
The road ahead and behind him was empty. But then that wasn't a surprise. The darkness hadn't lifted either, but then it could just be night time. He had lost track of the time of day weeks ago. Giles knew everyone was nervous including Spike, though he hid it well. he had been strangely quiet as they loaded the jeep and headed out.
The Hellmouth's opening had come as quite a shock. He never really thought they would loose. Buffy had been the strongest Slayer the council had seen in quite awhile. And they didn't quite know what to do with her, never having faced a Slayer who had refused to bend to their rules. Having friends to help her was what had kept her alive so long.
Willow, while at first she wasn't very powerful.Had become a very strong wicca;and when she had meant Tara.Well they had been a powerful duo. Tara's loss had brought out a side of Willow that had scared them all. Which was why the redhead was trying to stay clear of the magics. Until the Hellmouth's opening had forced her into practicing again.
Xander was the heart of their little group, he held them all together and has taken turns boosting everyones self confidance. Except where his own was concerned. His low self esteem had caused him to leave Anya at the alter. Something he had deeply regreted, and they had been working on their relationship when Anya's death had rocked their little group once more. Xander has been holding up pretty well though.
Dawn, the key made into Buffy's sister. Buffy had died to save her and she had come to mean alot to everyone. Ecspecially Spike. He protected her with his very life.Almost dieing for her on several occasions.
And Spike. Part of the most feared vampires to roam the earth had followed in his grandsire's footsteps. The chip had been a blessing though Spike may disagree with that. He had become a member of their family.Though they failed to show it most of the time. Since the opening of the Hellmouth and Buffy's turning they had come to rely on the souled vampire more than ever. And it showed, glancing at the sleeping blonde,Giles sighed. He knew he hadn't really had the time to deal with the newness of having a soul.
He heard him every night;yelling out in his sleep. It had taken everything in the ex-watcher not to go in and comfort him.He knew it wouldn't be welcome though. Even now the blonde was tossing fitfully in his sleep.
Seeing the exit up ahead,Giles took it.Looking around he saw L.A had been affected also.Though to a lesser degree. Where the streets in Sunnydale were over run with demons. Here the streets were deserted. No sign of life at all. The stores were boarded up.Driving slowly he read the few street signs which were left standing.Hoping they would be able to find Angel's hotel in the never ending darkness.

Cordelia lit the last of the candles before turning back to what seemed to be the millionth book she had read. They had all been working around the clock for what seemed like years.Trying to figure out what had triggered the constant darkness which had befallen Los Angeles. And strangely enough the absence of visions. Not that she was complaining. The lack of headaches was a God send. But it had put Angel into a tizzy.
"Bloody hell, this is useless." Wesley's voice broke through the silence, cauysing her to jump. "There's nothing here.No reason or prophecy that states anything about complete darkness."
Angel looked up from the book he was reading, then closed it before sitting it down on the table. Standing up he walked over to the window beofre saying.
"He's right. We've been through ever book here twice over and come up with nothing. Take a break, guys. Even my eyes are starting to hurt."
Letting out a sigh in relief they all closed the books they were reading and sat back in their chairs. Trying to ignore their growling stomaches. They needed to go out and get supplies, but Angel had been reluctant to let them leave. Not knowing what they would find. And he himself was relunctant to leave them alone.
"What in the-" At the sound of Angel's shocked voice they all got up and walked over to the window, seeing the headlights of an approacing vehicle had them all shocked. Cars of any kind had been something of a rare occurance these days.
"I wonder who that could be." Wesley said, puzzlement coloring his voice.
"I don't know. But who ever it is seems to be coming here." Fred said softly. Angel said nothing, but he did head over to where the weapons were stored, not taking any chances, It wouldn't be the first time someone had come trying to steal what little they had.
Walking swiftly towards the entrance Angel waited for who ever it was to enter. Only to step back in surprise when Giles walked in.
"Giles!?! Oh my God,Giles!!!!" Cordelia screamed before running over to hug the ex-watcher. Pulling away from the extremely uncomfortable looking ex-watcher, she looked behind him to see who else had come.
"Cordelia." Giles said, before walking further into the hotel to allow room for the rest of the tired group to enter. The others watched as they all entered.
Angel watched as tehy all filed in,knowing their appearance there couldn't be a good thing. Contact with the group from Sunnydale wasn't something of a normal occurance. Not looking forward to yet another akward conversation with Buffy. These days any contact wbetween them ended in angry words. Not seeing her sent a frission of fear through him.
"Where's Buffy?" He asked. Breaking the silence that had decsended over them.
"I'll explain everything once everyones here." Giles said softly, Angel knew the news wasn't going to be good, and who were they waiting for, he wondered. Looking around he didn't see anyone else missing.
"Bloody hell,Bit.What do you got in this bag.Bricks?"
Angel stiffened, Buffy had mentioned something about Spike not being able to harm humans, but he never dreamed the younger vampire would have stuck around Sunnydale. He watched in amazement as his childe came through the door, struggling with what looked to be luggage. Walking closely behinds him was a tall lanky teen. Who looked strangely enough like Dawn.
"Nothing you can't handle,Blondie." The teen replied, then giggled at the pout Spike sent her.
"Oi! I told you not to call me that. Big Bad here." Causing the teen to laugh out right.
"Big Softy you mean."
Giles sighed wearily, looking for all the world like a father at the end of his ropes. "Is that everything,Spike?" He asked the younger vampire, wanting nothing more than to find the nearest bed and drop into it. Sleep, though was along time coming. He had alot of explaining to do to the L.A branch of Slayerrettes. And by the looks of things around here. They knew nothing of the Hellmouth's opening.

Cordleia screeched when Spike walked through the door, causing the two vampires to wince.
"What is Spike doing here? Angel kill him, quick!!!" The ex-cheerleader screamed,.
"No!" Dawn hollored, standing protectively in front of the blonde. Cordelia looked at her like she was crazy.
"Dawn,He's a vampire.Grrr! He'll eat us all." Spike's laughing caused her to look at him in amazement.
"You mean the Pouf didn't tell you?" He asked. "I play nice with the puppies now. Have for awhile now."
"Yeah. And he's got a soul too." Dawn broke in wanting to put an end to any future thoughts of staking her vampire protector. Then she gave Spike a look filled with apology.
"A soul!?!?" The shocked reply was given by all present. Causing Spike to applaude.
"Very good.Do you do encores." He asked, falling back on sarcasm,it was his only defense against the look Angel was guving him. The look while familiar, hurt. He remembers the times when Angel had looked on him with nothing but pride and love in his eyes. But no more. Now the lothing was plain to see.Had he never really loved him? Buffy had believed that you needed a soul to love, she couldn't have been more wrong.
Dru had said it so well. Vampires can love, just not wisely. Truer words were never spoken. He had loved amy times in his unlife, and all of them unwisely. He watched as the group of humans settled down into chairs, leaving he and Angel standing. Since his appearance his sire hadn't taken his eyes off of him. Probably thinks I'm going to kill one of his pet humans. Spike thought to himself.
But he couldn't have been more wrong. Angel was watching Spike, but not for the reasons he thought. Angel was thinking about how thin Spike had become since he had last seen him. And the caukiness that had been so much of the younger vampires personality, was gone. In it's place was a new understanding. His eyes were at one time filled with the joy of life, were now somber. The light behind them, dimmed.
He found that he wanted to be the one to put the light back into his eyes. But feared it wouldn't be possible due to the distance that had come between them. Turning his attention back to the group gathered before him,Angel knew he had along road ahead of him.Regaining Spike's trust was going to be hard to do.
