what kind of dell laptop should i get? we get a discount at work so i'm thinking of getting one.... what's a good basic laptop for doing homework and downloading music?
Ok, so you want it just for general MS Office, Quickbooks, powerpoint, music dling, use right?
Because of what I use computers for, my brain doesn't quite understand "doesn't need to be that powerful" but I think you want a midrange laptop on their spectrum. If you get anything the Inspiron 600m you definatly need to get more ram, no question. 256 is not enough, and the ones below the 600m have a shared ram system, so their video card will run on the installed ram, so get more, a lot more.
Ideally in your range, I think I would opt for the 600m, if you're not bothered by a 14 inch monitor. Opt for a second battery instead of a floppy drive. It's about 760 and it will probably bump up a bit more.
thanks for the suggestions -- very helpful!! do you think the 600m would be powerful enough to run more heavy-duty programs? i might want to put some statistical software on there (i know, i'm a dweebus), which you probably don't use but i'm sure you use intense video programs.
Most likely it will handle any stat software. If you want to be sure, you can either A) check the system requirements of the software and compare to the computer or B) tell me what software you want to use and I'll tell you.
Generally that computer will probably do pretty much anything the general user needs short of good video and audio editing, effects editing, hardcore gaming, etc etc.
Sometimes I wish I had a normal education and a normal job, my toys would be less expensive.
