History;
Early life for Spencer was often unpredictable and hectic. Operating a farm in quiet town Davenport, Robert and Mary tried to give their children everything they could. For the most part, the three children were content with their lot -it was better than some people, and often helped out on the farm when they could. When Spencer was nine, his father died of a heart attack in the field, Spencer was the one to find his father -slumped over at the wheel of a tractor, long since dead. The farm slowly became too much for Mary to handle as Jonathan departed for college. Selling the farm, Mary moved Sarah and Spencer further into town and took a job as a seamstress while the kids continued with school.
When the twins were fourteen, Mary married Alexander Matthews, a local that she had started to see following an introduction from a mutual friend. The marriage gave Sarah and Spencer an elder brother Michael, and two years later, a little sister, Jessica. While the children all tended to get along, Spence butted heads with his step-father on a regular basis, eventually deciding to leave home due to the friction it was causing for his mother.
Spencer finished school in Iowa before applying to UCLA with a full scholarship. He got in, and at the age of seventeen, moved to L.A. His Freshman year wasn't all that great; the new place, the harder work, and the onset of his electrical power mutation. It took most of the second semester for Spencer to get his outbursts of energy under control, but fear of overloading kept him from entering the library with their numerous computers and electronic devices. It also put a large strain on his relationship with college girlfriend, Melissa. His attempts at hiding his mutation causing a rift to form between the pair. Melissa eventually broke it off with Spencer before his third year of classes. Deciding that it was likely for the best, Spencer focused on his studies instead of relationships and kept his distance from most people, choosing not to pursue any further relationships.
Graduating UCLA with a major in English and minor in Poli-Sci, Spencer went job hunting; although it was far from ideal, he ended up playing PA to an Assistant Director in a local fashion magazine. What was supposed to be a short term stepping stone turned into two and a half years of experience and Spencer found himself enjoying the whole thing. Spending a year and a half in Italy on assignment. While in Italy, Spencer met Aleze Giovannia, a shockingly intelligent, witty woman with a free spirit and sense of adventure. Spencer fell head over heels for Aleze painfully fast. Their relationship never evolved past utter infatuation on his part and fun on hers, although Spencer convinced himself he was in love. After returning to L.A, slightly heartbroken but far more worldly experience, Spencer was given a new position in the company. Spencer took to writing short, public interest pieces for the magazine, before long he was offered a regular slot on a sister company writing bigger pieces. Spencer jumped at the chance.
Spencer's investigating took him to a few darker places; his interest in police failings, reporting on crimes and conspiracy, his inching towards the Government and it's mutant policies. Digging deeper, Spencer found a large number of Government files on numerous organisations of mutants and potential threats, including files on anti-mutant organisations. During this time, Spencer met and befriended Connie McCoy; a filing assistant with the local library. Spencer's frequent trips to look through old newspaper microfiche sparked up conversation between the pair and then, over the course of several weeks, a relationship bloomed. Although Spencer's work was always important, Connie became a cementing part of Spencer's life, after dating for six months, Connie moved in with Spencer and the writer was trying to work out the best way to propose to Connie. When his big break came with the story on the Government and mutants, Spencer became immersed and somewhat closed off from Connie while he was working. When Spencer started digging further into classified information, Connie felt shut out and abandoned. The day she left him, Spencer hacked into the Military database system, illegally.
Several weeks after a certain breech in Government security, Spencer was met by two large males in military uniform and one in a plain, dark suit. Since Spencer wasn't exactly skilled when it came to hiding his tracks with computers, he wasn't surprised that he'd been found. Although he more expected to be thrown in jail for hacking into a Government facility than to be taken to Washington state and introduced to Emma Frost -who, by the way, fucking hot.
Whatever was said during that meeting, hardly paid attention to on Spencer's part. Possibly why he found out a few days later that he'd agreed to take part in whatever it was Miss Frost was offering.
Although, it didn't seem like she was offering what the military thought she was. Weird that.
Appearance;
HEIGHT: 5'10"
HAIR: light brown
EYES: blue
IDENTIFYING MARKS: scar on bottom of chin, lightning bolt tattoo on the inside of middle finger on left hand, dimples when he grins.
Spencer is a slight, lean male, standing at five foot ten. With pale blue eyes, a near constant smile and adorable dimples, he's a bit of a charmer and doesn't mind using his boyish looks to help that out. Mostly, Spencer sticks to wearing loose shirts and jeans, he prefers khaki pants and plain t-shirts. Although he has questionable taste in dress shirts and ties used for work when office time is required. Back in L.A, he has a section of 'beach bum surfer wear' in his closet.
Personality;
FIRST IMPRESSION: At first glance, Spencer is your typical valley boy -good looks, sun kissed hair and skin, sharp smile and bright eyes. Underneath that, there's a witty, intelligent young man with a curious ability and an interest in the origins of 'his kind' and why so few have achieved this genetic alteration. He's amusing, has numerous theories he's happy to share and a rather easy going young man. There's not much that gets to him, mellow and laid back, but poked enough, he's an angry bear.
POSITIVE TRAITS: patient, understanding, confident, loyal, intelligent, ambitious
NEGATIVE TRAITS: melodramatic, vain, stubborn, explosive temper, easy stressed, problem drinker
ROMANTIC PERSONA: When it comes to the fairer sex, Spencer is utterly enamoured. He favors strong willed women, smart and outgoing. He falls in and out of love like most people change their socks, but he's always only in love with one woman at a time. However fleeting it is. He's the over-dramatic romantic type, believing in first dates and flowers, compliments and gentlemanly courtship -unless the passion is that all consuming heat that just doesn't let up.
TURN ONS: intelligence, athleticism, confidence, strength, sense of humour
TURN OFFS: clingy, needy types, really 'girly' girls, feminists, over tanned beach girls
SOCIAL PERSONA: A powerhouse socialiser -part of his charm and wit is getting people to talk when they wouldn't normally. He's got a rather varied education, making him a great guy for talking to just about anyone, he makes a point of knowing a little on everything -primarily for work but it's helped socially too. He's a bit of a flirty drunk, and seriously lacks self preservation in that position.
Mutation;
POWERS: Electric Absorption and Manipulation
ABSORPTION: can absorb electricity from all sources (e.g. static in the air, outlets, etc.), and the powers are based in such a way that he absorbs electricity at all times. Although not easily controlled, Spencer is able to store the electricity for durations of no more than three days.
MANIPULATION: can discharge the energy amassed by absorption through lightning blasts from hands and/or other parts of the body. If energy is built up by a long duration, it will spill from his body without focus. With flares of temper Spencer can discharge energy from hands, feet, eyes, torso and back in one powerful burst.
ABILITIES: Spencer has a higher IQ than most people, he's above average in that regard and has a near eidetic memory, mostly applying to things he's read -not heard/seen. Spencer has a major in English and a minor in Political Science and is a skilled writer, has his own short-hand as well as knowledge of Pitman and Gregg short-hand. He is also a strong swimmer and is multi-lingual, speaking English and French fluently and speaking Spanish, Russian and German to a certain degree.
