A/N: Spoilers for the end of the book. I lent my copy of Havemercy away so take that as my excuse for lack of proper...real names and stuff in this.
They didn’t keep track of the days as they traveled. For Thom, this was something of a change, but being organized while traveling with Rook was not a luxury allowed. He was lucky if Rook remembered to notify him when they left town. He didn’t think Rook did it on purpose - well, maybe sometimes he did it on purpose - Rook’s need for constant movement was nearly insatiable. After the dissolution of the Airmen, Rook just hadn’t been the same.
Which was why Thom was a little surprised when Rook steered their little traveling circus act back to the Ke-Han empire.
“Returning to the scene of the crime?” Thom commented, smiling faintly in hopes to lighten the mood. “Feeling nostalgic, hm?”
Rook didn’t say a word, surprising Thom even more. In all rights Rook should have punched him in the face. But he stood there silently, looking from far away at the still-ruined city that had been besieged not long ago, where so many lives ended, whether in battle or not. For a moment, Thom considered suggesting that they just skip this city, find a different place to sight-see, but he didn’t. That would have definitely earned him a punch in the face.
“It’s quiet,” Rook muttered gruffly, and Thom glanced over at him, waiting for more, but Rook doesn’t explain. He never explains. Likes to let Thom figure out what he’s thinking when no human in existence could ever possibly figure it out. Only one person - not even a human - could do that, and they were scrap metal now.
So Thom settles for the only thing he can do; he sets his hand on Rook’s arm, moving closer, and looks up at the man with a smile, saying,
“Shall we try to sneak in?”
Rook’s harsh laugh is such a comforting sound to Thom in that dead atmosphere.
