“Well, look what you did now.”
Axel shrugged, cracking his shoulders as he stretched. His chakrams disappeared with a little wave of his hands. In front of them, the blazing city glowed yellow, radiant against the dark sky. Smoke swirled up into choking night, putting out the stars, masking the towering cathedral in a haze. “You surprised?”
Xigbar snorted, putting hands on his hips. “It’s really annoying to have to dig through fields of charcoal afterwards.”
“You could put it out,” Axel suggested, smiling.
“And suck the whole place into a black hole?” Xigbar rolled his eyes - eye singular? Axel kept forgetting to ask him about that. “I’ll pass.”
Sighing, Axel moved closer, giving Xigbar a pat on the arm. “You used to be so much more fun,” he lamented.
Xigbar punched Axel in the shoulder. The redhead flinched playfully, laughing.
“That’s more like it.” Axel paused, drumming his fingers on his chin as he gazed out over the waves of flames, the reds and the yellows and the oranges mixing to ruined, charred black. “You remember the days we’d set a world on fire just to watch it burn? It wasn’t long ago. What happened to that?”
Xigbar leered at him, face thrown into shadow by the flickering light. “I found something much more interesting to watch burn,” he replied suggestively.
“Is that so?” Axel said, letting out a short laugh. “I think you’re just getting old.”
“Wanna bet, kid?” Xigbar retorted, drawing out the last word like it was an insult.
Axel’s eyes shone, but Xigbar couldn’t tell if the light was from the fiery city or something else completely. “I’ll race you to the cathedral. Portals are cheating.”
“Last one there cleans up this mess,” Xigbar demanded, and they were running down the hill, into the smoke and ashes and blazing streets.
