As you know, I have accepted the challenge and am participating in the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer. I've been training with long walks on the weekends, and walking as often as I can during the week. Progress has been made, and I feel confident that I'll be able to tackle the full 39 miles come May 5th and 6th.
I need your support with my fundraising. I've pledged to raise $3,000 to help those in the medically underserved population - to include minorities, the poor, elderly, and under- or uninsured - with a mission to accelerate access to care and finding a cure for breast cancer. At the time of post, I have raised $2,045 - an incredible amount, to be sure. To put that in perspective:
The average cost of a mammogram is $100. I've raised enough money so far for at least 20 mammograms for women who may otherwise have not received them because of inadequate health insurance or none at all.
The average cost of an MRI is $1,000. Similarly, the cost of a biopsy can begin at nearly $1,000 - I've raised funds for a MRI (which is a Magnetic Resonance Imaging technique to help determine if a mass is malignant or benign); and a biopsy, which is cutting out a little piece of tissue from the breast to examine under a microscope for the presence of cancer cells.
With your help, we can help even more people get the aid they need. I've done some very basic math here, and if just 20 people donate $50, I'll have reached my $3,000 goal, and then some. Any amount is appreciated - but think about that: 20 people give up $5 latte's for 10 days, and someone can get a life-changing MRI. That's amazing - and that's the power that you have to help.
Donating is easy; simply
click here! Only 45 more days till the walk - how exciting! I'll be ready for it, you can bet on that. To those who've already given, thank you so much - you've helped me get where I am today, and you're helping others in more ways than you. Thank you, everyone, for supporting me - you really do make a difference!
PS: I have made this post public, in hopes that you fine, upstanding people might link to it and spread the word. Thank you, thank you!!
