Okay. Life = insane, need vacation, have booked, no time to plan what to actually do when I get there. If you were going to these 2 places for these amounts of time, what would you want to do? What should *I* do

When I went to LA, my first stop was the La Brea Tar Pits. I'd go again if I ever went back there, and if you've never been, they're a MUST-see! Then again, I've never been big on "maps of the stars homes!" kinda stuff, haha. We *did* drive around for a day up in the hills, just to take in the view - ie, natural AND manmade. I don't care much who lives where, but I *do* love seeing the beautiful buildings... and the scenery up there would make those homes worth the price even if they were shacks!
Boston I can't help you with, sorry - I haven't been there since I was 14! If I were to go back, though, I'd for sure drive the half hour out to Walden Woods.
I'll second the La Brea Tar Pits vote. Also, they're relatively close to Mann's Chinese Theater, the walk of stars, and all of those other cheesy (but fun if you've never seen them before) Hollywood type stores and museums.
Another good visit is the Griffith's Observatory, and if you can get tickets the new J Paul Getty museum is great.
For Boston, I'd highly suggest starting with a Duck Tour. They go all over the city, so it's a good way to figure out what else you'd like to see, too. There's also the Freedom Trail that starts out at the Park St. T station -- it's a red line painted on the ground that you follow around to most of the historic sites in the city. It really is a nice walk.
