[OOC] Virgil's prejudices aka Virgil can be a dick

Oct 01, 2007 17:19

So, I was reading up some of the Static comics and found that someone uploaded bits of the volume where Virgil discovers that Rick (the character Richie is based on) is gay. The scans in question are here.

Now, I consider the comics and cartoon show completely separate from each other, but I think it's interesting to note that Virgil does have certain prejudices in the show and maybe I haven't addressed them very clearly.

Villains/Bang-Babies/Metahumans - Before, the bulk of Virgil's enemies were basically meta-humans who robbed stores, attacked people etc, etc. After a while, Virgil realized that all meta-humans aren't like that and most of them were just scared and lost. BUT. It took a while to sink in. The same doesn't apply to, for example, Harley and Ivy. Voluntary acts of  "evil" (for lack of a better word) will not be tolerated by Virgil unless you had a good reason for it (MY FAMILY IS STARVING AND I NEED THE MONEY). Here, in camp, his concept of evil will pretty much restricted to anybody who attacks other people or someone he knows. I welcome the opportunity of people hitting Virgil and telling him that he's an idiot. :/

(edit - as an extremely helpful anon pointed out earlier and I should make a note of. Virgil will not attack, hunt down etc etc of other villains. He will still converse with them normally [maybe not as comfortably as he would with anyone else but]. This mostly applies to Harley and Ivy and any other villains from Virgil's world mostly)

Guns - VIRGIL HATES GUNS. Hates them a lot. Like, Batman-level hate towards guns.  While not everyone in camp has super-powers and he understands that zombies are in fact, a threat, he kinda automatically loses respect for people with guns. This ties in with his mom-issues. Which I will essay on, one of these days.

Sexuality - This is trickier to pin down on. In the comics, Virgil has a pretty extreme reaction to finding out Rick's gay. On the other hand, when Wolfram told Virgil that he got married to Yuuri, Virgil was a bit stunned, but didn't dwell on it. SO. My thoughts on this.

Considering that Virgil has issues with racism in Static Shock the television show, I play him as rather open-minded towards race, colour and sexuality. On the other hand, while he may not have any extreme reaction towards any of these things, he may not 100% comfortable with discussing homosexuality so much until he gets to know the person really well or just trusts him in general (like the discussion with Robin. IT SET HIM BACK AT BIT but it didn't get to him so much because he knows the bat-family well enough). He's not going to make a big deal about it and will show some curiousness about how well homosexual romances in camp work! But until then he's not going to be very comfortable with it (unless of course, the extreme sap gets to him like with Wolfram and Yuuri)

A-Any questions?

playing, chara thoughts, oh canon
