the golden compass

When I was a kid, my mom bought me The Golden Compass, and I remember starting to read it over and over but I just could never really get into it enough to go past the first 20 pages. Now I'm thinking maybe there's a reason that I just couldn't seem to get myself into this particular book. As it turns out, the author of the book, Philip Pullman has ( Read more... )

honestly, I don't feel like Pullman actually went out of his way to make people hate God or anything like that. so, he's an atheist, obviously that is going to influence his novels. you can't help what you believe. I think, just like the whole Dumbledore-is-gay thing, that people blow these kinds of things out of proportion for what they really are. just because Dubledore is gay doesn't mean the actual novel or text or events that happen changed, and just because Pullman says that the underlying idea of the series is about 'killing God' doesn't actually change the fantasy world he created, it just means that he had some other muse for the story than someone like C.S. Lewis with the Cronicles of Narnia ( ... )

I hadn't heard about this at all.
I was actually talking about the movie with Brian just the other day.
He was talking about how much his brother LOVED the book
And was going to let me borrow it, because I never read it when I was little.

Although I'm sure that he might have a "kill God" undertone to his book I am more than sure that this is not corrupting little children.
The Narnia books have a very serious Christian undertone that I never picked up on as a child.
When children read children's books I firmly believe that they read them as adventure stories and they very rarely pick up on the religious/political/whatever undertones.

Its just a book. If christens are allowed to have books like the left behind series, and shows like veggie tales then Atheists should have the right to be able to right a book about their beliefs. We live in America, and we are all allowed to express our selves openly and freely. It pains me that we have to feel so much hate and discontent when it comes to art that promotes a different view. I don’t think he is trying to corrupt, atheism his belief and in no way does he find a bad thing. He isn’t asking children to go shot up heroin and have unprotected sex with each other. He is just proposing a very different view of how our world works. Like many Christians think they world would be better if every one was a Christian, many atheists believe the world would benefit with out any sort of religion. We don’t have to agree with what a book says, but we must stop thinking that every one who has a different idea and agenda then our own is evil. Does Jesus really want us to feel this dislike of others purely because they profess a ( ... )
