You know, I should really take notes or something because invariably I will notice all sorts of cool shit during the episode and then after it's over I'm just sitting there 'Um.... I liked it! Pretty boys and blood, yay! Stuff happened and people angsted!'
So!
Let's see...
-Why did the deadshirt at the start think it was impossible that the car beat him someplace? It's a car, dude. It was specifically invented to be faster than people. I know you were under some stress but come on.
-They were pretty heavy handed with Dean's drinking this episode, but I think that's more of a sign of how fast and hard Dean seems to be disintegrating now. And maybe a sign of how well Sam is doing, like if he has less within himself to worry about, he has better personal resources to use in worrying about Dean. So maybe it's coming up more because Sam is allowing himself to notice it more.
-My God, how depressing is it to see Dean trying to work himself up to a casual sex encounter? I mean, just, multiple layers of sad.
-And how sad was it that Sam couldn't save the guy who robbed the liquor store? I liked that the people that were judged as guilty were also the people who had done the most to make up for themselves or seemed to feel honestly bad about it. It seems sort of backward, the way Osiris judges for guilt when in those cases the guilt was a sign that they knew just how badly they'd fucked up. I don't know, it doesn't absolve them of what they did, of course. It's just interesting.
-I've said I'm shit at meta and episode discussion, right? Give me another episode with Dean's inner thigh and I will be articulate as FUCK.
-SAM! Sam, I love you but watching Osiris humor your lawyerisms was pretty damn entertaining."I OBJECT!" "Oh, okay then, I hope that was fun for you. Moving on."
-DEAN IN CHAINS THOUGH! AND SAM DEFENDING HIM! \O/
-AND JO! HI JO! Lookin kinda pale and grey there but you're as awesome as ever, telling Osiris to blow his guilt trips out his ears even when he has total control over you. I was fine with it being Jo that he called, as well. I saw that was a bone of contention on tumblr but it worked for me. She was a valid choice and he didn't seem like he was specifically looking for the things Dean might feel most guilty of. As well, I'm thinking he only had access to the dead and anyone who was physically there. If he had to drag people off the street to judge then it would follow that he would have to physically bring in any living witnesses as well. Or have the witness already be present, as in Sam's case.
-As for the rest of the trial and Sam and Dean's contrasting headspaces, I'm gonna leave the meatiest parts of the episode alone until I think a little more on it and, more importantly ;p, read the much deeper and more thoughtful reactions I'm sure will be found on my flist. I'll just say that I was honestly expecting Dean to step out of the salt circle when Jo showed up and give himself up. It seemed like he could be to that point to me. Heavy shit, show, heavy shit.
-Oh, and I'll say that I liked how they covered Sam's lack of guilt at the end, even though it did feel a little sudden to me. Not too bad though, I still bought it. It seems like they went to the effort to say that it's not that Sam feels like he's been absolved or that the things he did feel guilty for don't count any more. Just that he feels like he can move forward now. Which is pretty cool. I hope it lasts.
-Did anyone else get the feeling that this episode was also sort of a primer for new watchers? With the clips and the showing how Sam and Dean got together in the pilot. I wonder if they think/know that have a lot of new viewers. Or even viewers who have come back to the show or something. Or maybe they just like clips, I don't know.
-Hey and what the hell happened with the guy who caught Sam stealing the horn?
-OH! And why did they go to a graveyard in the middle of the night to look at a grave and then bugger off again? Did the flower shop woman not tell Dean it was a graveyard?
I HAVE QUESTIONS! IMPORTANT HORN AND FLOWER QUESTIONS.
WAIT! One more thing. Jared's hair continues to get more and more attractive to me. That is all.
Edit: DID YOU GUYS SEE THE
NEW 7X06 STILLS? MOTHERFUCKING CROWLEY LOOKING DAPPER AS HELL AND THE EVIL WINCHESTER BROTHERS RECREATING THE ROBBERY SCENE FROM PULP FICTION OR SOME SHIT?
