PSI Seminar - just say no

Jan 29, 2008 23:57

Last Thursday through Sunday I attended a PSI Seminar in Portland, OR with my stepmother & sister. Yes I was wary, however, I didn't pay for the course it was purchased for me as a "gift". The schedule went something like this ( Read more... )

Well, first off, we had 20 minute breaks every two hours, not twice a day.
I understand where you're coming from. We've talked about it alot, but I almost feel like you're obsessing over it.
Yeah they used cultlike methods. But then again, I feel really positive, and excited about my life after going.
I don't feel brainwashed or any kind of negative consequence from attending the seminar. I feel fantastic even.
I feel like I've realized how important my relationships with people are and am basically motivated to do certain things in my life because i have a newfound confidence in myself that I can actually do them.
Because you keep talking about how this seminar was a cult every day since we got back kind of makes me feel like it shouldn't be beneficial, and that I shouldn't recommend it to anyone. But I feel the opposite. I found it was an extremely positive exprience.
I am sad that you won't be going to the graduation with me.

"Yeah they used cultlike methods" You've just justified "cultlike methods" because it helped you? Is it okay if someone signs up and isn't fully informed of the methods they use regardless of whether or not it will help them? As simple as it sounds a person cannot make a fully informed decision if they are not fully informed. Not once did I say what you gained from PSI was not beneficial ( ... )

As I don't know your significant other I unfortunately cannot tell you exactly how to communicate your concerns without pushing her away. I do understand what you're going through and wish you the best of luck. Luckily for me the PSI phase was short lived in my family and neither of my family members pursued it further. I am forever grateful ( ... )

I find what you experienced is very interesting. I have been to the PSI seminars and found it to be extremely rewarding. You are entitled to your opinion, yet I find you might have exaggerated a few things. I went to the seminar in Denver and my experience was exhilarating and VERY rewarding. We had about 4 to 5 breaks per day. If the room was so cold, why didn't you ask someone to turn up the heat? Also, you are allowed to leave the room for your own break if you want to use the restroom or eat something. It sounds like you are more of a victim to what you experienced. Instead of making a choice that was right for you, you decide to break down a seminar that has worked for thousands upon thousands of people. This is the longest running personal growth seminar company, so obviously they are doing something right ( ... )

Most people that attend PSI find the experience exhilarating then the exhilaration tends to wear off after a few days. Allowed to leave the room? Yes if you enjoy being publicly berated by whomever is running the seminar about your bladder habits. The seminar was nothing that I hadn't read before in personal development books so I may have not found it as moving as others who aren't familiar with personal development ( ... )

I know this string is old, but it provided me with exactly the feedback I needed. My husband was roped into the PSI Basic class over the weekend. My internal alarms went off when he told me the class could not be rescheduled or cancelled. What kind of training organization doesn't permit this? Only one that intends to own your soul, no matter what. My honey is a strong-willed, intelligent man. We've talked about the influences of EST-like reprogramming over the 20+ years we've been married. I never ever thought they would get their hooks in him, but alas, he succumbed to the last day pressures of signing up for the remainder of the Leadership 'training'. He came home all enthused about his experience and admitted that several of the ideas I had brought to him before. It's not the ideas that are objectionable, but the method by which it is impaled ( ... )

I've left this entire thread up for people exactly like you. I'm glad you found it helpful and that you're husband was able to see through the PSI "high" and make the decision that he did. It is very scary how many very intelligent, educated people get sucked into the PSI programs and have a hard time ever getting back on their feet again. In many cases it is not just a major financial blow to attendees and their families but it affects friendships and even marriage in some cases.

Psi Seminars anonymous January 28 2010, 05:44:06 UTC
Conflicted about PSI Seminars? I too, sometimes feel this way. On the one hand, I have received much benefit from these seminars, however, on the other, there is something inside me that gives me a "creepy" feeling about some of my experiences. I have done all the advanced seminars (except PLD). Anyways, there aren't many people I can talk to about my experiences, since most of my friends and family haven't done the seminars, the people I've met from the seminars are "biased, " so to speak (in other words they tell me it's my "fear" or "programs" talking), and those who "hate" PSI are a little on the extreme for me ( ... )

I'm glad you were able to find benefits in attending PSI. As I've said before it's not their message it's the LGAT methods they use which I absolutely don't agree with. There is no doubt in my mind I would have never attended had I known then what I know now about PSI Seminars. All of that however is on me - and I suppose if it wasn't for my experience at PSI this very informative thread would have never been created. I'm very big on personal development and agree there are many different ways one can go about it. I honestly would have no problem with the methods PSI seminars uses if they were just upfront (before you pay a dime upfront) about the methods they use to enforce their program. But that's the unexpected hook they used to snag people in a vulnerable state whether it be self imposed or PSI imposed. As you know PSI Seminars tells attendees to get their friends and family to attend and if they don't ... then they encourage you to find new like minded friends. I prefer to remain open minded, accepting of others, respect their ( ... )

Napoleon Hill anonymous February 1 2010, 19:30:04 UTC
If you were to research the history of PSI Seminars you would find that its based on the teaching of Napoleon Hill, as laid out in his works like 'Think and Grow Rich' and the 'Laws of Success'. It is also highly influenced by the teaching of Earl Nightingale, the author of 'The Strangest Secret', Alexander Everett, the founder of Mind Dynamics and Maxwell Maltz, the author of 'Psycho-Cybernetics ( ... )

Misrepresentations in my account regarding the Basic class schedule? Let me ask you one question - did you attend the 2008 basic seminar I refer to in my original post? If not - then I would suggest there is little room for you to tell me that I'm misrepresenting the experience I recounted above ( ... )
