VP squadrons are Patrol squadrons they fly the P-3Cs. VQ squadrons are reconnaissance squadrons we (VQ-1 and VQ-2 (VQ-3,4,and 5 are different) fly EP-3Es. Anyway the Navy decided to merge all the P-3 maintenance departments into three CMOs (Consolidated Maintenance Organizations) one on the East Coast one on the West coast and one in Hawaii. Thats all well and good for two of the three that only have P-3Cs(apparently not though since they are failing hard, but what they didn't think about was the fact that the EP-3E is so much different than the P-3C the VP guys are lost on it and end up breaking things or doing shotty work, also the VQ squadrons have several four month one plane small dets around the world at all times where as VP send all planes and maintainers out to one place for six month deployments this leaves devision scratching its head over how to man all these crews. It just doesn't work so they end up sending all VQ on VQ dets anyway or sending VP guys that don't know how to fix the plane and missions go unflown or VQ
