After finishing their lunch, Draco and Hermione went back to her office. They had much more to talk about and plan if this was going to fool anyone. Of course every head turned to look at them as they walked in, both laughing at a joke Draco had told, Hermione's arm again looped through Draco's.
And so the office rumour mill would begin. Though, if the owl pecking at her office window was any indication, it already had.
It was a letter from Harry.
Hermione,
What is going on? First Ron comes storming in with the Prophet going on about you and Malfoy, only to come back later saying you denied anything was going on. Then Ginny comes up to see me for lunch in semi-shock because she says she saw you leaving for lunch arm in arm with the man you told Ron you had nothing to do with. And Ginny wasn't the only one who saw you, you've become the topic of the rumour mill. What the hell is going on? Just clear my confusion, alright?
-Harry
She showed the letter to Draco, who simply smirked. "Seems like our plan is working, even in its infancy."
As she penned a letter to Harry, she read it out loud.
Harry,
Simply put, I didn't lie to Ron. When he came by this morning, there wasn't anything going on between myself and Draco. However, he and I met for lunch to discuss the article and got to talking. We're ready to put the past behind us and see if we have a shot together. Clearly, we have chemistry. Tell Ginny I'll drop by later to chat. Draco's hovering over my shoulder waiting for me to finish so we can decide on dinner plans.
-Hermione
"Dinner plans...good idea. Being seen together in public is good, people will start to wonder and talk more."
And so the afternoon began, Draco lounging on her couch, first sending out an owl for dinner reservations, and then one to his parents spinning a similar story to Hermione's. Narcissa would be angry if she found out through the Prophet again, and an angry Narcissa Malfoy was not a factor Draco or Hermione wanted to contend with. As Hermione worked through the paperwork on her desk, case file after case file, she and Draco fell into amiable conversation, finding out the little things about one another. Luckily, the way they were playing the story, they wouldn't be expected to know everything about each other, but it wouldn't hurt to start learning. The pair hadn't been top students in their years at Hogwarts for nothing.
It had been about 2 hours now, and Hermione was nearly seething at the poor case file on her desk. Information had been misfiled and collected improperly, making her job infinitely more difficult. Seeing her obvious frustration, Malfoy sat up.
"Hermione, take a break. Come here."
"I can't, I have to..."
"It can wait."
He gestured for her to sit with him on the couch. Begrudgingly, she got up and did as he asked. Turning on the couch, he pushed her legs onto the couch so she was facing away from him. His hands on her shoulders, he gently pulled, indicating for her to lean back.
At first Hermione marveled at the strange position they were in, one that before today she never could have imagined. But today, under the circumstances, she didn't mind, especially once he started massaging her tense shoulders. He was somehow working out the knots of tension with a practiced ease, and she was in a comfortable haze. It was relaxing, and Hermione couldn't remember the last time she felt this relaxed.
She came out of that wonderful state quicker than she would have liked, the door to her office crashing open. Startled, she sat up quickly, Draco's hands still on her shoulders. Turning on the couch, swinging her legs over the edge, she looked towards the door, only to sigh in exasperation.
“Really, Ron? Twice in one day? To what do I owe the pleasure?”
She had a feeling she knew why he was here, but she was more irritated that he had interrupted. It wasn't as if they had been up to anything illicit, but she never got the chance to relax...and shockingly, she realised now, she could with Draco.
Draco managed a poker face, not snickering once, as Ron's face began to turn red.
“WHAT THE HELL IS THIS?”
He frantically waved a piece of parchment in her face, and she realised it was the letter she had written Harry.
“I know I helped you with your homework for years Ron, but I know you're capable of reading.”
This left him sputtering, and Hermione sighed, leaning back against Draco. This small movement was enough to break Ron out of his stupor.
“What is he doing here?”
At this, Hermione moved to stand up angrily, but Draco held her back, arms gently on her shoulders again. Feeling her relax slightly, he spoke.
“I happen to be spending time with my girlfriend Weasley. My lovely overworked girlfriend who was taking a break and relaxing before you so rudely barged in.”
Hermione turned slightly in his arms an smiled at him. She knew this was all a game, but there was something comforting about hearing him call her his girlfriend. And lovely? Where had that come from?
“She is not your girlfriend Malfoy!”
At this, Draco smirked and let loose of Hermione. There was no way he was going to miss this. True to form, Hermione jumped up from the couch, and was staring Ron down with a glare that could have been deadly.
“Ronald Weasley! What gives you the right the say that? Or the nerve even? I can choose whomever the hell I want for a boyfriend and there is nothing you can do to stop me. You may be my friend Ronald, but you are not my keeper, and you had better learn that very quickly. Draco is my boyfriend. If you don't like it, that's your issue. Now get out of my office before I hex you or owl your mother.”
A range emotions crossed Ron's face, but he soon turned without another word, fuming, and left. Hermione sat back down on the couch, and Draco pulled her into his arms. She looked at him questioningly.
“As your boyfriend or not, I can guarantee I would never treat you that way. You deserve more than that.”
She really didn't have a response for that. This was certainly a new Draco Malfoy she was seeing. Perhaps fake boyfriend wouldn't cut it.
