"Seoul?" Chen blanches, "But I'm perfectly content here in Beijing!"
A tall being wearing the latest issued reaper uniform sighs. Pale hands come up to pull the hood down and Chen was left staring at the face of bad news. Kris' visage was twisted in a sympathetic expression but his eyes were unyielding.
"Why are you even complaining? Seoul was considerably smaller than here."
"Bu-but," Chen splutters in protest, "Xiumin?" A shake of the head. "Lay?" Another sigh. "Luhan? Tao?!"
Kris hefts the large winged scythe without an effort and looked straight at Chen. His face has melted back to its default indifference and its the last thing Chen sees before the hood was back in its place. A guttural sound replaces the previous smooth tenor of Kris' voice as he speaks, "Orders are orders."
Like all grim reapers, Kris disappears in a blink. Chen was left staring at the vacated spot, his ears ringing from the sound of fluttering wings, and his own robe ruffling in the breeze that accompanies the disappearance. His scythe, smaller than Kris' but still larger than most humans, floats beside him and was emitting a particular forlorn electrical sizzle. Probably reflecting its owner's feelings.
"Damn it." Dejected, Chen takes hold of his scythe and pulls up his own hood. He walks outside the recently reaped house, passing carelessly through upturned furniture, broken doors and sealed windows. He leaves the bodies of its occupants scattered in their heavily barricaded dining room, their souls long gone and limbs not quite intact.
Chen vanishes just as the telltale signs of reanimation starts.
The sole reason Chen has vehemently tried turning down his reassignment was that he does not like being alone. Petty, quite, but contrary to common misconception, not all reapers walk the earth in singles. Some does, yes, but others usually go in groups like them. Him.
He had never been alone before. Especially in a foreign country that oddly feels familiar. The whole thing would be what humans call terrifying. But reapers were not humans (they probably were before, a lifetime vaguely there in the back of their minds), following orders were their unbreakable oath and collecting souls to send them to the Registry Office was their life.
As such, orders were orders and Chen was duty bound to follow. No matter how hard, how far, and Chen winces, no matter how appallingly infested that country was.
With a crack of lightning hitting the dark ground of Seoul, Chen appears in the middle of a dilapidated city. The place reeks of death and gore; crumbling buildings and rusting metals were abundant, various objects litter the place, and the stench of decay was present all around.
Chen wrinkles his face in distaste when a particularly foul-smelling body brushes past him.
"Ugh," he steps away and swings his scythe through it. Instead of reaping like in normal living beings, because the soul the had already been collected even before its reanimation, the blade passes through like it was an empty space. The rotting body shuts down, frozen in its upright position like a wax figure.
Chen estimates at least half a year before it can move again, based on its state of decay. Or if he's lucky, a year until it breaks down in pieces and crumbles to ash.
"Grrrhgggrrrnn..."
"Not a minute and I'm already being swarmed." Chen grumbles, turning around after sensing and hearing another rumble of vocal cords behind him.
He sees a boy lumbering towards him. He was wearing clothes with a number of dark splotches; the white of his top barely recognizable from dirt and stains, while the jeans? Chen guesses, also dirty and ripped in various places. And then there was some sort of horns made of fabric on top of its grimy hair. Reindeer antlers, looks like.
"Rraarrrghgrrr..." Chen blinks, surprised, when the bo- no, dead body of a boy, stops a few steps away. It stands there, body hunched and head tilted as if observing Chen back. Which would be impossible because grim reapers should be invisible to it.
Now that he could really look, Chen momentarily wonders at the almost pristine condition of the body before him. Unlike the others that either has torn limbs or large chunks of flesh bitten out of them, this one has no such things. It looks dirty, true, but otherwise unharmed and looking freshly dead.
Curious and curiouser, when Chen moved a little closer, instead of lunging at his general area like most (reapers naturally attract the undead even though they can't see, probably like water to dry land if one would compare), it just stands there unmoving with its dead eyes brighter than most.
"You can see me? You're weird."
"Grrrraaaaahhh..." It shifts, its body shuddering and limbs twitching in response.
Was it trying to have a conversation with him?
"Can you understand me?" Chen asks, incredulous and a little bit amazed.
It doesn't respond but it raises a shaking hand. Chen frowns in confusion and his amazement fades down, thinking it wasn't different from the others after all. Until it wiggles its wrist, almost impatiently, and Chen spots a banner? rolled around its forearm and crusting with dirt.
"S? M Tow?" Chen squints, "S M Town?"
"Raaaghrgahg..."
"That's your name?" Chen snickers until he notices another barely readable word underneath. "Oh wait," letting go of his scythe and pulling his hood down, Chen grasps the wrists and scratches away the stain covering the rest of the letters, "aha! Baekhyun!"
Abruptly, something pulsed at the back of his mind. A heartbeat from a lifetime, a memory that was there but not. It was impossible, Chen tries to shake off the thought, no reaper remembers.
"Graaaah! Graaaaaaaaahhrah!"
Chen grins, thinking that the sounds that Baekhyun were suddenly making were celebratory grunts and growls. But then the sudden increase of groaning and shuffling noise caught his attention. A swarm of probably hundreds of dead bodies were coming from an alley.
"Groups. I hate it when they go in groups."
"Rrrraaaaaagh!"
"Yeah, yeah." With one last pat to Baekhyun's grimy head, mindful of its funny headband, Chen steps away. "See you around, Baekhyun."
A crack of lightning and Chen was gone, leaving the odd undead being behind and the unfamiliar vulnerability it brings.
"Not bad." Chen mutters, munching contentedly on an apple.
He was sitting on top of the biggest tent in one of the major human settlements in Seoul. He observes the humans going on about their everyday lives, protected by thin steel walls and armed guards near its only entrance.
It was a huge camp but organized, each human doing their assigned roles dutifully. The children were happy and there was a clear cut of authority which was usually rare without any undercurrents of opposition. It looks like a peaceful place of life in the middle of a wasteland, Chen had to give them that.
Taking out The List, Chen reads through his last assignments for the day. There were 20 names in the parchment, 4 of which belongs to this camp for the first time. He had already reaped 17 throughout the day. The last three were about to pass the entrance dying from blood loss and infection; two men named Oh Sehun and Kim Jongin, and a woman named Jung Soojung, all of them aged 34.
The three names sounded weird when he first read it, the syllables rolling softly in his tongue like he'd heard it before. Said it, even. It reminds him of Baekhyun, a reanimated corpse he had no business in getting familiar with in the last few days.
A commotion inside the tent below prompts him to stand and take his scythe. It's time. Chen chucks the finished apple behind him and disappears before it lands unnoticed in the ground.
"Make way!"
"They're bitten but alive! Fucking call the Medics!"
"Joonmyun! Joonmyun!"
"It's Sehun- wai- Jongin's bleeding out! Hurry!"
"Krystal! No! Let me through! Sooju- I'm her sister- Let! Me! Go!"
Appearing just outside the gates, Chen moves around the frantic humans, scoffing as one, two of them tried stemming the blood and preparing a large blade to probably cut off the bitten limbs. It's a good way, Chen admits when he first saw it done and a name fades out of The List, but right now it's too late.
"Ugh, move away," Chen clucks his tongue. One wrong swing, he could reap an unsuspecting soul and be sent to the Disciplinary Committee. The hovering humans were persistent, making his job harder. Sighing, he would have to use that.
Chen raises his scythe to the sky, dark clouds starting to gather ahead. If he can't use his scythe, he could definitely use a small current of lightning to reap. He prepares the strike but a faint growl distracts him. Chen spares a look and startles when he sees the familiar figure of Baekhyun shuffling closer. He takes a quick glance at the humans but it looks like they haven't noticed yet.
"What are you doing here?" He hissed. Chen wouldn't be able to do anything if the humans see Baekhyun and decide to put a bullet to its brain. "Baekhyun, this is the sixth time just for today. Stop following me!"
"Grrruuuaa-"
"Shh!"
If the undead could look sad then Chen swears Baekhyun looks sad at the moment without a single change in its dead facial expression. Its body continues to amble towards Chen, unmindful of the danger posed by the cluster of humans barely a stone throw away.
For an undead, Baekhyun got the mindless part perfected.
Worried for the careless Baekhyun, Chen swiftly brings down his scythe. With it comes an invisible strikes of lightning and Oh Sehun, Kim Jongin, and Jung Soojung takes their last breath. Chen hurries to Baekhyun, ignoring the dismayed cries of the humans behind and pulling the stiff body with him around one of the many buildings near the camp.
"Baekhyun," Chen scolds, pulling down his hood and glaring, "you're not supposed to follow me around." He plops down an old crate left in the alley. "How do you even do that? How do you keep finding me?"
"Grruugaaahrrrraa..." Baekhyun shuffles nearer, mouth going slack and showing Chen its blackened tongue from death. Amazingly, its teeth were still intact and looking like in good condition. Baekhyun probably had a great smile when he was alive. Chen minutely wondered who reaped Baekhyun.
"For the last time, I'm not lonely!"
"Rrruuuuaaarr..."
"No..."
Chen slumps, finally acknowledging defeat. The drain from using a special form of reaping coupled with the strange feeling that his last assignment had left him wrong-footed. He would normally continue arguing with the undead, berating him for dedicatedly following a reaper around like some pet to its master instead of looking around for its next meal.
But not tonight.
Tonight was too many unknowns. Names that ring bells that shouldn't be there, unnatural horror on behalf of a dead being, and for the first time, questions trying to rise to the surface beyond orders and duties.
"Grhhhhoooooorrrrhhh..."
He eyes Baekhyun, trying to find answers before voicing out the questions. He doesn't want to do it but it's there, the temptation to ask, to find out about a life a reaper shouldn't even begin to try and acknowledge.
"Why am-?" His voice was strained, a mere whisper to his usual tone. "Why are you so familiar? Why were they? Do I know you?" It's too late to even stop the questions even if he wanted to. It was human nature to be curious, was it not? "Do you know me?" Even though he wasn't human? Not anymore? "Who was I?"
There was no response, his desperation hanging between them. Baekhyun was so still, like a reaper had swung a scythe through him. For a moment, Chen wondered what the hell was he doing, why was he allowing himself to even talk to beings he previously hated for making his job harder?
Then Baekhyun moves, ambling forward and falling gracelessly to a sitting position beside Chen. Almost running Baekhyun through with the scythe in surprise, he stills as Baekhyun continues to shift. This close, the stench of rotting was unmistakable but he ignores it until Baekhyun settles its head on his shoulders with its stiff fists held close to its chest.
"I've lived this..." Chen mumbles despite the sudden insistent pounding on his head, threatening to break something, something, it's near, nearly there, ther-
The sound of fluttering wings and a tall reaper was standing before themhimthem, towering over theirhis figure and holding a large scythe.
"What are you doing?" A hood was pulled down and Kris was looking at themhim strangely, eyes flickering when his gaze passed by himhisside.
It should be suspicious, a moment Chen could have questioned, but his mind was infuriatingly blank. The pounding in his head gone and replaced by a white haze. His surroundings were unnaturally silent, the previous foreign weight on his shoulders and unpleasant smell vanishing from his attention.
"Kris...?"
"You're being recalled."
"Why...?"
"We need you in Beijing."
"Okay."
A current of lightning and the sound of wings fade as panicked figures run into the alley, three undead beings shambling after them. They pass by the old crate, bumping to it in their haste to get away.
They don't notice the unusual large pile of ash that scatters to the ground.
"Munich sucks." Tao snickers at Chen's heartfelt exclamation, the two of them walking away from their latest assignments.
"Compared to where?"
"Seou-" Chen stops, blinking and forgetting what he was about to say.
"So?" Tao looks at him, confused.
"Sucks," Chen insists, "the swarm of undead at Berlin was nothing to the viciousness of the undead here."
"Even Beijing?"
"Beijing was so long ago."
Tao laughs as Chen continues to grumble. They make their way towards the others, Luhan and Xiumin visible far ahead. A sudden bright light behind them make them stop and turn. Another grim reaper was there, the scythe he? she? holds was glowing with light.
"Who are you? I've never seen your scythe before." Chen elbows Tao for his rudeness.
"Sorry." The reaper pulls down his! hood, revealing a sheepish smile and crinkled eyes. "I'm Baekhyun. HQ needs your group after you finish, I'm just here to deliver the message."
Nodding his assent, Chen pulls Tao along when the other didn't move. He noticed Tao's unusually focused gaze at the new arrival.
"What is wrong with you?" Chen hisses when Tao still kept looking back at Baekhyun?
"Doesn't he seem familiar to you?"
"No." He snaps, still dragging the other reaper. "Now come on, we need to hurry and get the others."
Chen doesn't look back, doesn't let himself acknowledge the thoughts that sprung up at Tao's question. He only heaves a sigh of relief when the tugging on his mind finally subsides after the new reaper disappears.
Chen could get to know the other reaper at another time but he wouldn't now. Not now.
yep. idk. happy new year! ^^
