It was Ric's first day on the job as an IPD officer. Ric was excited, and so was Bridge. For the longest time, Ric's systems had been so questionable that he hadn't gone on patrols -- or even outside the station -- for a while. But RIC v2.0 was a valuable asset to their arsenal. And it could be the same on the island ( Read more... )

Cuthbert squinted, looking farther down the boardwalk. He saw Bridge, of course, but there was something else, bounding off the path and around Bridge's legs, that Bert first took for an animal, and then when he saw the sunlight wink off it, had to reconsider. He gave Bridge an unsure but nevertheless friendly smile as he approached, throwing up a wave, his eyes trying to follow the thing's exuberant movements. When he got close enough he realized that the dog was part animal and part machine, maybe... or maybe even all machine, simply made to look like a dog? Bert had heard about things like that in stories of the olden days, called sai-borqes or something like it, but seeing one running around and diving into the greenery just like Lisey's dog Smuckers was something else. Bert's grin stretched across his face, and he remembered to grin and mutter a 'hello' at Bridge, but he couldn't take his eyes off the thing.

"What in the hell is this?" he asked, finally tearing his eyes away to look up at Bridge with a surprised grin.

"A robotic interactive canine," Bridge replied. Everyone'd taken to Ric so well; no one seemed to be scared at all. Well, except for Coraline's cat, but Bridge acknowledged that there were certain aspects of genetics you just couldn't fight. But he was so proud that they liked Ric, and that Ric behaved himself so well.

The dog popped out of the bushes fully at the sound of Cuthbert's voice, tail wagging. "His name's Ric," Bridge explained, falling out of his handstand. "He's our dog from home."

Cuthbert was already sitting in a crouch, hands on his knees and peering at Ric with a huge grin on his face. "Ric!" Bert extended his hand, glancing up briefly at Bridge as he righted himself. "You took this fellow on patrols and things?"

Now Bert was torn between being grateful and regretting he'd left Glue Boy at home; on the one hand, Glue was made nervous by the way Lloyd's rabbits liked to weave in and out of his legs, on the other hand, he would've paid good money to see his reaction to Ric.

Ric barked and moved towards Cuthbert's hand, taking it as an invitation to get his head rubbed if he just pushed the right way.

Bridge nodded and smiled, watching Ric make a new friend. "After we gave him an upgrade, yeah, definitely. He's got great tracking and surveillance equipment, and his weapons systems are pretty cool, too."
