My sister lives out there, so I've been a few times to visit and I love it.
It's very similar to Pittsburgh in a lot of ways, but way younger and with way more city planning. And more beer. :) And it has an actual vibrant downtown area.
Cost of living is not much different, but the cost of real estate is way higher than here.
The city prides itself on its uniqueness, which can be great or annoying, depending on a lot of things, but there's always something going on.
It's a very bike/dog/baby friendly town, public transportation seems good and reliable. I don't know...anything specific you're looking for?
No, not really. Just confirmation that I'm getting excited to live there for good reason. And to see if there's any hidden yuckiness since it seems too good to be true!

Yay! Well, for years I've wanted to move to the west coast. They're more laid back and liberal, and they take care of themselves better. I know Portland is rainy, but it appears to be grey for less than the usual 8mths. Pgh. is. Love it's lack of humidity and 75 degree summers! Lack of pollution is also a plus. You got yer ocean on one side, mountains on the other= awesome! Plus I hear they have killer industrial and psychobilly scenes!
I thought about S.Fran for awhile, but realized if I wanted to settle down and own a home it was impossible there. Plus it's gonna fall into the ocean ; ) Friends of mine mentioned they're moving there, and I have another pal already there so that'll be cool.
To me, Pittsburgh is like living at your parents house. It's comfy, cheap, and friendly- but you don't really want to live there forever. I'm getting up there in years and want to plant my roots someplace tailored to me.

Don't worry, there are at least two Steelers bars in Portland. :)
